Ever walked out of the barber’s with a fresh cut, caught your reflection in a shop window and thought your face looked rounder than when you walked in? The sides are usually the first place to look.
A round face is about as wide as it is long, with the cheeks as its widest point. Barbers have a set of fixes for it, from height on top and tight sides to a fringe cut on the diagonal and a beard trimmed to a point at the chin.
So here are 26 cuts from barbers’ own portfolios, each one chosen because the client’s face reads round: crops and fades, pompadours and long waves, curls, beards, and cuts for Black and Asian men. Each comes with the words to use in the chair, so you don’t have to mime “a bit shorter on the sides” with your hands.
Short haircuts for round faces
Textured crop with a skin fade
A choppy top gives a round face its angles without asking you to blow-dry anything tall, and the skin fade keeps the sides tight. The fringe falls on an angle, the opposite of the heavy straight-across fringe barbers warn against. Ed Sheeran has often been photographed with textured, layered hair. Our textured crop guide has 28 more.
What to ask for Textured crop, about two inches on top point cut and pushed forward to one side, and a mid skin fade blended up from the ears.
French crop with a mid fade
A fringe cut heavy and straight across makes a round face look wider, so this French crop is point cut into short, uneven pieces that stop above the brow, and the mid fade keeps the sides tight. Work in a little matte clay with your fingers.
What to ask for French crop, an inch and a half on top cut choppy, the fringe point cut short and uneven, and a mid skin fade.
Ivy League with a taper
Pete & Pedro lists the Ivy League for round faces when the top is left a little longer than a crew cut, with a light part or a brush-up, and this one takes the part. It also goes by the Harvard Clip or the Princeton (the names give away which campuses it grew up on). Elijah Wood has often been photographed with side-parted cuts with volume on top.
What to ask for Ivy League, an inch and a half at the front going shorter to the crown, a side part, and a number 2 taper.
Angular fringe
Cut on a diagonal from one temple, an angular fringe draws the line a round face doesn’t have, and the tapered sides keep the width off. (The mint is optional, though it does make the angle easy to spot.) Our textured fringe guide has 21 more fringes.
What to ask for Angular fringe, longer on one side and cut on a diagonal across the forehead, textured on top, and the sides tapered short.
Short cut for thinning hair
Height is the usual advice, but you need hair on top to build it. “A well-cut textured crop or short back and sides without the added height still looks deliberate,” says The VOU. Our guide to haircuts for a receding hairline covers a hairline on the move.
What to ask for Short back and sides, the top kept short and neat with no attempt at height, and the sides cut close all the way round.
Silver crop with short sides
Where the hair on top is still full, leave enough to sweep over. Short back and sides with some length on top suits a round face, and taking the front to one side adds some asymmetry.
What to ask for Number 1 on the sides tapered to the neck, an inch and a half left on top, and the front combed over to one side.
Fade haircuts for round faces
Short slick back with a low fade
A slick back keeps the top sleek and the sides narrow. This one is cut short, with some wave left in, and the low fade starts just above the ears. A shiny pomade combed through gives it the finish. Our guide to fade haircuts has 38 fades, low to high.
What to ask for Low fade starting just above the ears, about two inches on top combed back, and a shiny pomade to finish.
Wavy comb over with a hard part
A hard part shaves a straight line into a round outline, and the wavy top combs over it. The fade is blended softly into the sides, and the mustache is entirely your own business.
What to ask for Comb over, two and a half inches on top with the wave left in, a hard part, and a blended skin fade.
Swept-back quiff with a high skin fade and stubble
This quiff is swept up and back like a pompadour, but it sits lower, and the high skin fade and stubble give it harder edges. The VOU pairs a quiff with a beard kept fuller at the chin than at the sides, and a short stubble beard is the low-commitment version of that.
What to ask for Quiff, about three inches on top swept up and back with a light hold, a high skin fade, and short, even stubble.
High fade with a curly quiff
“The quiff adds vertical length, contrasting with the round outline,” says The VOU. Here it’s built from curls pushed up and forward, and the high fade stops them spreading at the sides. James Corden has often been photographed with a quiff.
What to ask for High fade, two inches of curls on top pushed up and forward, a sharp line-up, and a pick through the top.
Medium and long hairstyles for round faces
Pompadour with tapered sides
“This hairstyle will elongate the face, giving you the illusion of height to balance the wider lower jawline,” says barber Nick Hall. It takes a blow-dryer and a matte pomade every morning (the name comes from Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress). You’ll find 39 more in our guide to medium-length haircuts.
What to ask for Pompadour, four inches at the front, tapered sides kept close to the head, and blow-dried up and back with a matte pomade.
Long layered waves
Nick Hall warns that long hair without layers can weigh down a round face. Here long layers run through the waves past the shoulders, and a deep side part puts the line off center. Our long haircuts guide has 31 more.
What to ask for Length past the shoulders, long layers through the lengths, nothing cut short around the face, and a deep side part.
Mullet with faded sides
Short sides keep the width down, and a mullet keeps its sides short and saves its length for the back. The top here is swept back too, and the mustache is a separate decision. Our modern mullet guide has 19 more.
What to ask for Mullet with the sides faded short, the top left long enough to sweep back, and the back to the collar.
Curly haircuts for round faces
Wavy top with a temple fade
Wavy hair shrinks as it dries and spreads outward as well as up, so a wavy top brings width along with its height. A fade at the temple takes the width back out and leaves the waves on top. Our curly hairstyles guide has 101 more, from tight coils to long ringlets.
What to ask for Wavy top with two inches left on top, a fade at the temples and nape, and the beard shaped to the jaw line.
Long curly top
Pile the curls on top and take the sides short, and the shape goes up. Swept to one side, they add a diagonal across the forehead too. Alfred Enoch has often been photographed with his natural curls. On a humid day, four inches of curls will make their own plans, so keep a curl cream by the door.
What to ask for Long curly top cut dry, four inches left on top, the sides taken short, and the curls left to fall forward to one side.
Haircuts for round faces with a beard
Buzz cut with a boxed beard
A buzz takes the height away. A short boxed beard, kept shorter at the sides and a little longer underneath, adds some length below the jaw without adding width at the cheeks. Our buzz cut guide runs from no guard to a number 8.
What to ask for Buzz cut, a number 2 on top, a skin fade, and a short boxed beard squared off and left a little longer underneath.
Side part with a long, full beard
The beard here is grown long and full, cheeks included, which is more than the Beard Club’s round-face advice asks for. For the same look with less width, ask for the cheek line taken up and keep the length at the chin. The slicked side part and skin fade put a diagonal and some height on top.
What to ask for Side part slicked over, three inches on top, a skin fade, and a long full beard with natural cheek lines, squared at the neck.
Skin fade with a pointed beard
The Beard Club’s picks for a round face include pointed styles like the anchor and the Van Dyke, because a pointed chin adds sharp angles to the lower face. This one narrows from the cheeks to a point, under a skin fade.
What to ask for Skin fade, an inch on top with a line-up, and a beard trimmed short at the cheeks that narrows to a sharp point.
Close crop with a gray beard
Round faces lack hard lines, so this crop gets two: the line-up is cut square at the corners of the forehead. A high skin fade keeps the sides narrow, and gray hair this short needs nothing more than a wash.
What to ask for Short crop at about a number 1 on top, a high skin fade, a squared line-up, and a gray beard kept shortest at the cheeks.
Swept-back top with a ducktail beard
A ducktail tapers to a point below the jaw, so it stretches the face downward. This one has been grown long enough to need its own comb, and the swept-back top adds some height at the other end.
What to ask for Swept-back top with three inches left, the sides tapered, and a long ducktail beard with the sides kept noticeably shorter.
Shaved head with a horseshoe mustache
With no hair on top, the beard sets the outline. The Beard Club warns that a chin strap with no length at the chin only outlines a round face, so this one widens below the mouth, under a horseshoe mustache.
What to ask for Head shaved smooth all over, a horseshoe mustache grown down past the mouth, and a narrow beard along the jaw that widens below the mouth.
Haircuts for Black men with round faces
Short afro with a shape-up
A low fade holds the sides close, and the afro keeps its height on top, so natural hair follows the same rule as a pompadour. Our guide to haircuts for Black men has 38 more, from low cuts to locs.
What to ask for Short afro, about an inch and a half on top shaped tall rather than wide, a low fade, and a sharp line-up.
Short twists with faded sides
Twists stand up on top while the faded sides stay tight, so all the growth goes upward. The goatee adds a little length at the bottom of the face to match the height at the top.
What to ask for Short twists on top, about two inches long, the sides faded short, and a neat goatee with the cheeks shaved clean.
Curly top with a skin fade
This one keeps the curls short and even all over the top, with no quiff to build. A skin fade suits tight curls on a round face, since the curls stay on top while the sides go to skin. Our taper fade guide has 53 versions, from a low taper to a skin fade.
What to ask for Curly top kept to an even inch and a half, a skin fade starting at the temple, and a crisp line-up at the front.
Haircuts for Asian men with round faces
Spiky quiff with a high skin fade
Pete & Pedro puts a textured quiff with a high taper on its round-face list, and this spiky version takes the idea further up. The spikes give a soft outline a few angles, and the high skin fade takes the sides to skin well above the ears.
What to ask for Spiky quiff, about three inches on top pushed up and forward with texture, and a high skin fade cut close at the temples.
Messy crop with a scissor taper
Pete & Pedro’s round-face list starts with short back and sides under a textured top, and this is the low-effort take. The top is cut choppy and left messy, and the sides are tapered with scissors, so there’s no fade line to keep sharp between visits.
What to ask for Textured crop, about two and a half inches on top cut choppy, the sides scissor-tapered short with no fade, and a messy finish.

What is a round face?
Your face is round if it’s about as wide as it is long, with the cheeks as the widest part and the forehead and jaw narrower. Barber Nick Hall describes it as “full cheeks and a curved jawline” with a “short face length compared to width.” To check, measure from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin, then across your cheekbones at the widest point. If the two are within about half an inch of each other, you’re leaning round.
Which haircut suits a round face?
The haircuts that suit a round face put height on top and keep the sides short. The barbers at Gentlemen’s Tonic in Mayfair advise men with round faces “to try and add height, as this will draw the attention away from the sides of the face.” “The height of the haircut makes your face look longer and the short sides draw attention away from the width of your face,” they add.
Then add an angle. “Since round faces tend to lack hard lines or definition, a nice angle-heavy haircut can do wonders,” says Nick Hall. A side part, a hard part, a diagonal fringe or choppy texture all count. Our guide to short haircuts for men has 51 more cuts that follow the same rule.
What to ask your barber for
Bring a photo and say you want the cut to make your face look longer. Then give three details: how much length you want on top, how high the fade or taper should start, and where you part your hair. If you’ve got a beard, say whether you want it boxed, pointed or kept short, and ask for the cheeks kept tight either way.
How often will you need a trim?
A fade needs a trim every two to four weeks, according to ManCave Barbershop, and undercuts and high fades need it more often to keep the line sharp, says The VOU. Cuts with more length on top can stretch further, since a little extra growth shows less than it does on a skin fade. A beard’s cheek and neck lines need touching up every few days.
Do round faces look better with longer or shorter hair?
Both suit a round face. Short hair needs height on top and tight sides. Longer hair needs layers, because long hair without them can weigh down the face, and anything sticking out at the sides adds width. Layered length past the jaw draws vertical lines instead.
What haircut suits a round, chubby face?
The same rules apply, and the beard’s neckline does more of the work. The Beard Club’s advice is to trim it to about two fingers above the Adam’s apple and keep the edge sharp, so the lower face gets a line it doesn’t have on its own.
Which beard suits a round face?
A beard with short sides and a longer chin. “The golden rule is to keep the sides short and tapered, let the chin grow longer, and maintain crisp, defined lines,” says the Beard Club. Its picks for a round face are the goatee, the extended goatee, the anchor, the ducktail, the Van Dyke, the short boxed beard and the Balbo. It warns against four. Muttonchops and thick sideburns widen the face. A full beard with thick sides adds width at the cheeks. A chin strap with no length at the chin outlines the roundness instead of breaking it up.
| Beard | What it does on a round face |
|---|---|
| Goatee | Puts a point at the chin to add length |
| Anchor | Narrows to a pointed chin for sharper angles |
| Ducktail | A longer, pointed chin with shorter sides |
| Short boxed beard | Short sides, a little more length at the chin |
| Full beard with thick sides | Adds width at the cheeks, so skip it |
Which haircuts should you skip with a round face?
Skip anything that adds width at the sides. Nick Hall recommends “avoiding any style where the hair protrudes out at the sides,” and long hair with no layers. A fringe that’s heavy and straight across widens the face too. On a two block, Daniel Park says to avoid a middle part “if you have a very round face.”
