Zegna
A wool mill from 1910 that planted its own forest, and one of the last houses that makes the cloth as well as the suit.
Zegna is the Italian luxury menswear house that starts upstream. Founded in Trivero in 1910, it owns its wool mill, weaves the cloth, and then makes the suit, and it sells that same cloth to competitors who cannot do the first part. When another tailoring brand advertises Zegna fabric, this is where it comes from. That vertical control is why we include the house in our guide to the best suit brands for men.
In the 1930s Ermenegildo Zegna planted half a million trees above his mill and built roads and a school for a mountain community that had neither. That investment became Oasi Zegna, a protected landscape the house still opens to the public today.
Behind the brand
History of Zegna
Ermenegildo Zegna was twenty when he took over his father’s small wool mill in Trivero, in the Biella Alps, in 1910. His ambition was to make the finest fabric in the world. That meant importing raw wool directly from Australia, Mongolia and South Africa rather than buying through brokers, so he could control the fiber from the start.
He built housing, a hospital, a school and a swimming pool for his workers, drove a road through the mountains at his own expense, and planted the conifers and rhododendrons that became Oasi Zegna.
The company moved from cloth into finished garments in the 1960s and became one of the largest menswear businesses in the world. It listed publicly in 2021 and shortened its name from Ermenegildo Zegna to Zegna. The group now also owns Thom Browne, taking a majority stake in 2018, and Tom Ford Fashion. The family remains in control four generations on.

The Zegna collection
Tailoring is the core, from ready-to-wear suits to the Su Misura made-to-measure program. Around it are knitwear, outerwear, leather goods and the shoes that now drive much of the brand’s search traffic. The house’s fabric names are worth learning because they tell you exactly what you are buying: Trofeo and Centoventimila for the ultrafine wools, High Performance for the everyday travel cloth, Cashco and Oasi Cashmere for the knits, and Oasi Lino for summer linen.
We include Zegna in our guide to the best suit brands for men, where it is one of the small group that controls its own cloth.
The Triple Stitch sneaker
The Triple Stitch is the Zegna product most people search for now, and it explains the house better than any suit. It is a laceless suede sneaker with an elastic collar that pulls on like a sock, named for the three lines of stitching across the toe. There is no visible logo anywhere on it. Buyers and the fashion press have nicknamed it the Birkin of sneakers, a measure of how far a quiet, logo-free shoe has traveled as a status object.
The appeal is the same one that sells the tailoring. The materials and the making carry the whole message, and nothing on the outside announces the price. It is the clearest example of Zegna’s argument that quality should be felt rather than displayed.
Craftsmanship and materials
The Trivero mill is the asset. Zegna buys raw fiber at source and runs an annual trophy for the world’s finest superfine wool, giving it first call on the best fleeces produced anywhere. That vertical control means the cloth in a Zegna jacket can be traced back to a specific fleece. Almost no clothing brand can claim that.
Oasi Cashmere is the current expression of the same thinking. It is a traceable cashmere supply chain the house has committed to across its collections. For a company that already owned the mill, extending traceability all the way to the fiber was a logical step rather than a cosmetic one.
Oasi Zegna
Oasi Zegna is the protected natural area that sits above the Trivero mill in the Biella Alps. It covers roughly a hundred square kilometers of forest and mountain, threaded by the panoramic road Ermenegildo Zegna built at his own expense and planted with the conifers and rhododendrons he added from the 1930s. It is open to the public, free, and has been maintained for ninety years.
The name is now stamped across the brand’s fabrics and campaigns, from Oasi Cashmere to Oasi Lino. The place came first, decades before the house thought to put its name on cloth, and it still frames how Zegna talks about where its materials come from and who looks after them.
Where to buy Zegna
Zegna sells through its own stores, its official site at zegna.com and department stores, with a handful of dedicated outlet locations for past-season stock. Su Misura is handled in the flagship boutiques, where you choose the cloth from the mill’s own book. If you want the fabric without the Zegna label, look for Zegna cloth listed by other tailors.
Zegna price
Zegna prices at the upper end of ready-to-wear tailoring, below bespoke and above the mainstream Italian brands. A suit runs into the low thousands of dollars and Su Misura above that, with knitwear, ties and the Triple Stitch sneaker in the high hundreds. For a garment you will wear for a decade, buying from the company that made the cloth removes a layer of guesswork about what you are actually getting.
