Cucinelli grew up in a farming family in Castel Rigone and watched his father take factory work that humiliated him. He started in 1978 with a modest loan and the colored-cashmere idea. The business grew through the 1980s, and in 1985 he bought a fourteenth-century castle in the hamlet of Solomeo and moved the company there. Over the following decades he restored the village. The company listed on the Milan exchange in 2012, with Cucinelli keeping a controlling stake. It is a public company rather than part of a luxury group, and Solomeo remains the headquarters.
