The story

Lanvin is the oldest French couture house still in operation, and it is best known for its 1889 founding date, for a particular shade of blue, and for the mother-and-daughter drawing it uses as its mark. The house began as a milliner’s shop on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore and grew into a full couture operation without ever leaving the personal world of its founder.

The logo shows that origin plainly. It is a picture of two real people rather than a monogram or an abstract shape.

Behind the brand

Jeanne Lanvin was born in Paris in 1867, the eldest of eleven children. She was apprenticed to a milliner at thirteen and opened her own hat shop on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore in 1889. Her daughter Marguerite was born in 1897. The clothes Lanvin made for her daughter drew requests from clients, and children’s clothes led into womenswear. She joined the Syndicat de la Couture in 1909. That marks the move into couture proper. Menswear followed in 1926, making Lanvin one of the first couture houses to dress men. Jeanne Lanvin died in 1946.

Fosun, the Chinese investment group, acquired the house in 2018, and Lanvin is now part of a group of fashion companies assembled around it. The house is no longer independent, though its founding date is still the thing it trades on.

The mother and daughter mark

Paul Iribe drew the house logo in 1927 from a photograph of Jeanne Lanvin and her daughter Marguerite at a costume ball. The image shows them holding hands, and it has served as the house mark ever since. Very few fashion logos depict actual people. The same drawing appears on the Arpege bottle.

A Lanvin piece carries a family relationship as its identifying symbol. That gives the branding a personal register most houses cannot reach with a monogram.

Lanvin Blue

Jeanne Lanvin had a particular blue mixed for the house after seeing the color in Italian Quattrocento frescoes. She ran her own dye works at Nanterre to produce that blue and the other house colors. The shade became a recurring signature across the collections and ranks alongside the logo as a core part of the house’s identity.

The color works as a second mark, one that is visual rather than graphic. A blue Lanvin piece points back to a founder who controlled her own dye production and picked a specific historical shade.

The robe de style

The robe de style is a dress with a fitted bodice and a wide, low-set skirt over panniers. Lanvin offered it as an alternative to the straight flapper line of the 1920s. The silhouette kept volume and formality in a decade that favored flat, narrow clothes. The house used its own ateliers for the embroidery, beading and applique that finished these dresses.

Lanvin built an alternative to the prevailing silhouette instead of following it. A buyer drawn to that shape is looking at an early couture answer to the flapper line, with the fullness carried low through the skirt.

Arpege

Arpege launched in 1927 for Marguerite’s thirtieth birthday. The black ball bottle carries the same mother-and-daughter drawing in gold. The fragrance became an extension of the house’s founding image rather than a separate product.

The perfume keeps that personal origin on the dressing table. Arpege connects the beauty line to the founder and her daughter instead of to a marketing concept invented later.

Lanvin’s place in the market

Lanvin is in the designer tier of French luxury, trading on the longest continuous history in Paris couture. Its menswear line has run since 1926, and that history places the house in our ranking of the best suit brands for men. Lanvin formalwear is also a clear reference for the black tie dress code for men and for cocktail attire for men.

The house sells continuity rather than novelty. Its long history, personal logo and house color read as heritage inside a tier where most competitors trade on the current season.

Who Lanvin is for

Lanvin suits the person who wants a French luxury label with a personal origin and a long continuous history. It is for someone drawn to a recognizable blue, to fine embroidery and surface work, and to a menswear line that has belonged to the house since the 1920s.

The buyer is choosing a name anchored in a mother and daughter, an early couture silhouette, and a fragrance that repeats the same mark. Lanvin rewards attention to lineage and to details that have stayed in place since 1889.
