Chanel

Luxury's most disciplined holdout, still refusing to sell its clothes and bags online while leading the industry in social reach.

Chanel, featured in our ranking of the most popular luxury brands online - Luxe Digital
The story

Chanel is one of the biggest names in our annual ranking of the most popular luxury brands, and it is the strangest case on the list. It is the largest luxury brand on social media by follower count and one of the last to refuse ecommerce for its clothes and bags. You can buy a Chanel lipstick online at midnight. You cannot buy a Classic Flap without walking into a boutique.

The house is privately held by the Wertheimer family. Their partnership with Coco Chanel began with the perfume business in 1924, and the family now owns the entire company and has never taken it public. That independence is why Chanel can hold a line most of its rivals abandoned. Read our longer piece on how the brand went from hats to haute couture for the full arc.

Behind the brand

History of Chanel

Gabrielle Chanel opened a millinery boutique at 21 rue Cambon in Paris in 1910, then a shop in Deauville and another in Biarritz. She built the business on jersey, a fabric until then reserved for men’s underwear, and on the idea that a woman’s clothes should let her move. The little black dress, the collarless tweed jacket and the perfume N°5 all followed within two decades. In 1924 she licensed the perfume business to Pierre Wertheimer, and that deal still defines who owns Chanel today.

She closed the couture house during the Second World War and reopened it in 1954 at the age of seventy-one. Paris reviewed the comeback coldly and America embraced it. The 2.55 bag arrived a year later, named for the month it launched in February 1955, and gave the house its most durable single product.

Karl Lagerfeld took the studio in 1983 and held it for thirty-six years, longer than any designer at a comparable house. Virginie Viard succeeded him in 2019, and Matthieu Blazy arrived from Bottega Veneta as artistic director, showing his first Chanel collection in Paris in October 2025. The vocabulary still reads as Chanel from across a room.

Chanel bags

“Chanel bag” is the search that brings most people to the house, and the line is short by design. The 2.55, the Classic Flap, the Boy, the 19 and the Wallet on Chain account for most of what people mean by a Chanel bag, and the newer 22 and 25 are the softer, more casual answer for buyers who want something to throw over a shoulder. We cover the full set in our guide to the best Chanel bags.

The two flaps cause the most confusion. The 2.55 is the 1955 original, with a rectangular Mademoiselle clasp and a chain-only strap. The Classic Flap came later under Lagerfeld and uses the interlocking CC turnlock and a chain threaded with leather. Both come in caviar or lambskin. Caviar is a pebbled, harder calfskin that takes daily wear well, and lambskin is softer and scratches more easily, so the leather choice matters as much as the size.

The tweed jacket is the ready-to-wear equivalent of the flap. Chanel reissues it every season and never redesigns it out of recognition.

Chanel N°5 and beauty

Fragrance and beauty carry Chanel’s volume and are the entry point for most buyers. N°5 has been in continuous production since 1921, when the perfumer Ernest Beaux built it around a heavy dose of aldehydes that made it smell unlike anything else at the time. It remains one of the longest-lived products in any consumer category. Bleu de Chanel is the men’s lead fragrance, and Coco Mademoiselle and Chance the women’s. All of it sells online, unlike the bags and the clothes.

Haute couture, jewelry and watches

Chanel is one of the few houses still on the official haute couture calendar in Paris, showing hand-made collections twice a year for a small number of private clients. Its fine jewelry goes back to 1932, when Coco Chanel presented Bijoux de Diamants, the only high jewelry collection she designed in her lifetime, built entirely in diamonds and platinum around the comet and star motifs the house still uses. The J12 watch, launched in 2000 in black high-tech ceramic and named after the J-Class racing yachts, gave Chanel a real foothold in watchmaking rather than a licensed logo dial. None of this drives the volume that beauty does. It is where the house proves it belongs next to jewelers and couturiers.

Craftsmanship and materials

Chanel has spent decades buying the workshops it depends on. Through its Métiers d’Art division it owns the embroidery house Lesage, the feather and flower atelier Lemarié, the milliner Maison Michel and the shoemaker Massaro, among others, most of them small French houses that would otherwise have closed. Once a year the brand stages a Métiers d’Art collection built specifically to show what those workshops can do.

The tweed comes largely from Scotland, and the quilting on a flap bag is aligned so the diamonds match across the seams. That alignment is invisible until you see a bag where it was skipped.

Where to buy Chanel

Ready-to-wear, handbags and fine jewelry are boutique-only. Fragrance, beauty and eyewear sell on the official site and through authorized department stores. Most people buy their first flap on the secondhand market, where condition and authentication matter more than anywhere else in luxury. Chanel is one of the most counterfeited names in fashion, so buy through a specialist that authenticates rather than a private marketplace listing.

Chanel price

A Chanel bag is one of the fastest-appreciating objects in luxury. The medium Classic Flap cost about $2,850 in 2010 and passed $11,000 in 2025. That is close to four times its price in fifteen years, far ahead of inflation. Beauty and fragrance remain the accessible way in, with a lipstick starting under $100. If you are buying a bag, the medium Classic Flap in caviar leather has held its value best, and caviar takes daily wear far better than lambskin.

Frequently asked questions about Chanel

Can you buy Chanel bags online?
No. Chanel sells fragrance, beauty and eyewear online, but its ready-to-wear and handbags stay boutique-only. It is one of the last major houses to hold that line.
Who owns Chanel?
The Wertheimer family owns Chanel and keeps it private. The partnership began in 1924, when Coco Chanel licensed her perfume business to Pierre Wertheimer, and his grandsons Alain and Gérard now control the whole company.
How much is a Chanel bag?
A medium Classic Flap passed $11,000 in 2025, up from about $2,850 in 2010. Small leather goods and beauty are the accessible entry point, starting under $100.
What is the difference between the Chanel 2.55 and the Classic Flap?
The 2.55 is the 1955 original, with a rectangular Mademoiselle clasp and a chain-only strap. The Classic Flap came later under Karl Lagerfeld and uses the interlocking CC turnlock and a chain threaded with leather.
Is a Chanel bag a good investment?
The Classic Flap and the 2.55 have held their value better than almost any other handbag, helped by repeated price increases and tight supply. That is a market observation, not investment advice.
