What makes a Classic Flap a Classic Flap?
A Classic Flap is a quilted leather bag with a double flap, a CC turn-lock and a chain threaded with leather. Chanel calls today’s version the Classic 11.12 Handbag.
The diamond quilting is the first thing you notice from across a room. The turn-lock is the CC that Karl Lagerfeld is credited with making the house standard after he joined in 1983. The chain strap is woven through with leather.

That gives us the test. A true alternative needs quilting or a quilted look, a flap, a chain or a strap that behaves like one, and the range to go from day to evening.
Buy the real one, pre-owned
If only the CC will do, buy one that already exists. A pre-owned Chanel Classic Flap is the only route on this page to the real thing, and it keeps a bag that has already been made in use.
There’s plenty to choose from. One large resale platform alone had more than 250 Classic Double Flap bags in stock at the time of writing, from the mini to the jumbo. That depth of listings is also what makes the flap a bag you can sell on later.

1. Saint Laurent Loulou Matelassé: Chevrons instead of diamonds
The Saint Laurent Loulou trades Chanel’s diamonds for chevrons. It’s matelassé calfskin quilted in V shapes, and it closes with a magnetic flap.
The chain strap is the part you’ll use most. You can double it for a shorter shoulder bag or let it run long.
Saint Laurent launched the Loulou in 2017 and named it after Loulou de la Falaise, Yves Saint Laurent’s friend and muse. The small costs $2,750 new. 2. Miu Miu Matelassé Nappa: One quilting, several shapes
Miu Miu’s matelassé is quilted nappa leather, and the house makes it in several shapes, from the Arcadie to the Caprice. You pick the silhouette and keep the quilting.
Inside, Miu Miu lines its matelassé nappa in cotton satin and finishes it with gold-tone hardware. The Caprice matelassé nappa leather bag costs $3,300 to $3,400.

3. Gucci GG Marmont Shoulder Bag: Gucci’s own quilted classic
PurseBlog calls the Marmont “one of the most discussed, debated, bought, resold, and searched-for designer bags in the world”. The Gucci GG Marmont launched in 2016 under Alessandro Michele, in matelassé leather with a Double G drawn from a 1970s Gucci belt buckle.
It comes in five sizes, from a super mini at 6.5 inches to a large at 13.25. Gucci’s current version is the Jetset GG Marmont shoulder bag. It costs $1,750 in the small and $3,100 in the medium.

4. Louis Vuitton New Wave (pre-owned): Quilted, chained and out of production
Louis Vuitton released the New Wave in summer 2018 and has since discontinued it, so you’ll find it pre-owned. It’s quilted smooth calfskin, lined in microfiber, with a chain strap you can wear crossbody, long on the shoulder or doubled. A padded leather panel sits on the chain, and PurseBlog’s reviewer found the bag heavy even empty.

5. Fendi Baguette: The flap bag from Sex and the City
Silvia Venturini Fendi designed the Fendi Baguette in 1997, and it appeared on Sex and the City in 2000. It closes with a flap and an FF clasp, and those are what it shares with the Classic Flap.

6. Dior Caro: Cannage stitching and a perfume-bottle clasp
The Dior Caro is named for Christian Dior’s sister Catherine, known as Caro, and it launched with the Spring-Summer 2021 collection. The medium is supple calfskin with Cannage stitching, lined in lambskin and made in Italy. Its CD twist clasp is inspired by the seal of a Christian Dior perfume bottle, and a detachable CD chain strap lets you carry it by hand, on the shoulder or crossbody.

Hedi Slimane showed the Celine C Bag in 2018, drawn from Celine’s 1970s archive. It’s quilted calfskin on a chain, with a C where the Chanel has its CC, and Celine makes it in small and medium sizes.

8. Tory Burch Bunny Knot Shoulder Bag: Quilted in knots
The Tory Burch Bunny Knot Shoulder Bag is lamb leather quilted in knots, with a flap and a chain-and-leather strap for the shoulder or crossbody. Tory Burch says the knot comes from a chair cushion in Bunny Mellon’s Antigua home. It costs $595.
What we like

9. Coach Tabby with Pillow Quilting: Puffy, and proud of it
Coach was founded in 1941 as a family-run leather workshop in a New York City loft. The Coach Tabby is based on an archive shape from the 1970s, revived in 2019 under creative director Stuart Vevers.
The pillow-quilted version is puffy nappa leather closed with Coach’s signature C. It comes as the Tabby 20 and the Tabby 26, and the number is the bag’s length in centimeters.
What we like

- The puffy quilting is further from the Chanel look than a flat diamond

10. Tory Burch Charlie Quilted Chain Crossbody: Small, stitched and organized
The Tory Burch Charlie Quilted Chain Crossbody is Italian pebbled leather with tonal diamond stitching, from a Leather Working Group-certified tannery. It costs $395, and a larger version is $450.
It measures 8.1 x 4.7 x 1.6 inches and closes with a flap and a magnetic snap. The removable chain has a 22.2-inch drop and an adjustable leather shoulder guard. Inside are a zip pocket and four card slots, and Tory Burch says it fits a phone, keys and earbuds.

11. Michael Kors Tribeca Chain Crossbody: Calf leather on a chain
The Michael Kors Tribeca is a calf-leather crossbody with gold-tone hardware and a chain-link strap. The small version measures about 8.7 x 5.1 x 2.8 inches, closes with a clasp and has a slip pocket on the outside. Michael Kors also makes a larger Tribeca that converts from shoulder to crossbody.

How we chose these
We ranked on the job first: quilting, a flap, a chain and the range to go from day to evening.
Leather and make came second, and value came third, measured against what a medium Classic Flap costs rather than in the abstract. Last, we asked whether each bag stands in its own house’s name, and whether it has a resale market to go to when you’re done with it. The Loulou, the Marmont and the New Wave all do.
