Dior is regularly at the top of our ranking of the most popular luxury brands online. The house founded by Christian Dior in Paris in 1946 earns it on breadth. Few brands carry equal weight in couture, handbags, sneakers, fragrance and beauty at the same time, and fewer still convert that reach into the search interest and social conversation the ranking measures.

What we admire about Dior is that the codes still hold. The cannage quilting, the toile de Jouy, the bar jacket and the gray-and-white of 30 Avenue Montaigne all trace back to one man’s 1947 debut. They remain legible on a bag released this season.

Behind the brand

History of Dior

Christian Dior opened his house at 30 Avenue Montaigne in December 1946, financed by the textile magnate Marcel Boussac. His first collection arrived in February 1947, and the American editor Carmel Snow gave it the name that stuck: the New Look. After years of rationed fabric and square shoulders, Dior put forward a rounded shoulder, a cinched waist and a skirt that used yards of material. It read as both extravagance and relief, and it made Paris the center of fashion again within a single season.

Dior died in 1957, only eleven years after opening. The house survived him because it kept handing the studio to designers who could argue with the archive rather than copy it. Yves Saint Laurent took it at twenty-one, followed by Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano and Raf Simons. Maria Grazia Chiuri became the first woman to lead the house in 2016, and Kim Jones built the men’s line into a business of its own.

Dior handbags

The handbags carry the house commercially. The Lady Dior is the most recognizable. Dior gave one to Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1995, named it for her the following year, and its cannage quilting and swinging D-I-O-R charms have defined the brand ever since. The Saddle bag followed in 1999 under Galliano, was retired, and came back in 2018 to a strong reception. Dior fragrance

Fragrance is the most searched part of the house, and it is where Dior reaches a customer who may never buy a bag. Miss Dior launched in 1947 alongside the New Look, named for Christian Dior’s sister Catherine, and J’adore arrived in 1999. On the men’s side, Sauvage has been one of the best-selling fragrances in the world since perfumer François Demachy created it in 2015, and the richer Sauvage Elixir followed in 2021. Dior sneakers and shoes

Footwear turned Dior into a streetwear name. The B22 and B23 sneakers put the oblique monogram on a sole, the high-shine B30 followed, and the 2020 collaboration with Air Jordan on a Dior-made Air Jordan 1 sold out instantly and still trades for multiples of retail. Alongside them, the house’s slides and sandals draw heavy search of their own. This is the most accessible way into Dior’s ready-to-wear world after fragrance.

Craftsmanship and materials

Haute couture is the reason the rest of the business is credible. A Dior couture dress is still cut, pinned and hand-finished in the ateliers above Avenue Montaigne, and the techniques there feed the ready-to-wear below. The cannage motif itself began as furniture, borrowed from the Napoleon III medallion chairs Christian Dior placed in his salon for the first show.

The leather goods are made in Italy and France, and the house has spent the past decade buying its supply chain rather than renting it, from tanneries to embroidery ateliers.

How to spot a real Dior bag

Start with the cannage and the charms, because the Lady Dior is one of the most counterfeited bags in luxury. On a genuine bag the cannage quilting is even and plump, and the hanging D-I-O-R letter charms are weighty, cleanly cast and evenly spaced, with the “CHRISTIAN DIOR” and letter faces sharp rather than soft. The heat stamp inside reads “Christian Dior” in a precise, consistent font above a “made in Italy” or “made in France” mark. Newer bags carry a discreet microchip and a leather tab with an embossed serial or date code, so a supposedly current bag with no chip is suspect. Check that the stitching is straight and even, the hardware is heavy, and the Saddle’s magnetic clasp closes with a clean snap. Because Dior does not wholesale its bags, buy new from the house and buy pre-owned through a reseller that authenticates.

Small leather goods start in the high hundreds, the Lady Dior and the Saddle cost in the mid four figures and climb with size and leather choice, and couture is priced on request. Fragrance starts in the low hundreds and is the reason the house has scale.
