4. Hermès Sac Bijou Birkin - $2 million

As the most expensive Birkin ever created, the Sac Bijou Birkin is also the smallest. Designed to be worn as a bracelet, the miniature bag is made from rose gold and set with diamonds—2,712 diamonds to be exact, totalling an astonishing 89 carats in weight.

3. Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse - $3.8 million

Setting records and breaking hearts, the Mouawad 1001 Night Diamond Purse was listed as the world’s most expensive bag in the 2010 Guinness Book of World Records. And while it may no longer hold the title, the opulent accessory is still one of the most expensive purses ever made.

Valued at $3.8 million, the heart-shaped purse is handcrafted from 18K gold and is adorned with 4,517 diamonds (total weight of 382 carats), including 105 yellow, 56 pink and thousands of colorless. It was designed by renowned Lebanese jeweler Robert Mouawad and took over 8,000 hours of labor to complete.

2. Debbie Wingham’s Upcycled Easter Egg Purse - $6.7 million

The most valuable bag ever made to order is built from pre-loved items, but not just any pre-loved items. The Upcycled Easter Egg Purse is made from real Emu egg, adorned with 8,000 diamonds, lined with an Hermès silk scarf and fastened with a $40,000 pair of Cartier earrings.

Designed by celebrity couturier, Debbie Wingham, the egg-shaped bag was created for an anonymous buyer in 2019, who sent in her old designer pieces to be incorporated into the design. Wingham values it at $6.7 million. That figure is the designer’s own valuation on a private commission rather than a public sale, so treat it as an asking price rather than a result.

1. Hermès Original Birkin - $10.1 million

The bag that started the whole Birkin story is also the most expensive handbag ever sold. In July 2025, Sotheby’s Paris auctioned the original prototype Hermès made for Jane Birkin herself, and it went to a Japanese collector for €8.58 million, about $10.1 million with fees. Nine bidders chased it for ten minutes.

It is not the flashiest bag on this list. There are no diamonds and no gold, just black leather worn soft by years of real use, Birkin’s initials stamped inside the flap, and the nail clipper she hung from the chain. What buyers paid for was provenance: this is the single object every Birkin since has descended from.

The prototype gives itself away in small, telling ways. Its shoulder strap does not detach, which no production Birkin can say. It borrows the width and height of a Birkin 35 and the depth of a Birkin 40. The brass fittings are unplated, and the metal feet on the base are smaller than the ones you find on a shop-bought bag. Hermès made it in 1985, after Jane Birkin sat next to chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight and told him she could not find a decent leather weekend bag.

Buying these bags on the resale market

Almost nothing on this list is for sale. The Mouawad purse, the Wingham egg and the Ginza Tanaka Birkin are one-off commissions that have never traded, and the original Birkin went to a Japanese collector in 2025.

What does trade is the rest of the Hermès catalogue. Christie’s and Sotheby’s both run dedicated handbag sales, largely out of Hong Kong, New York and Paris, and the lots filling them are standard-production Birkins and Kellys rather than diamond-set one-offs. The same bags appear year-round on the authenticated resale platforms. That is the honest link between this ranking and a purchase. Exotic skins, rare colors and provenance set the records above, and the market underneath them is made of ordinary Togo and Epsom leather in the sizes Hermès produces every year.

Two things follow for a buyer. Condition and completeness matter more than they do at boutique level, so the box, the dust bag, the clochette, the lock and the receipt all move the price. And retail is not the ceiling on a Birkin. A standard-leather model starts around $9,000 in a boutique, but the boutique is the part you cannot get, so the resale market sets the number you will actually pay.
