Gucci
A Florentine leather workshop that became Kering's engine, and the house that proved a logo can be both a liability and an asset.
Gucci is an Italian luxury house founded in Florence in 1921, and today it is the largest brand in the French group Kering. It is always among the top brands in our annual ranking of the most popular luxury brands, and it is the most interesting one to watch. No house of this size has swung further between quiet and loud in a single decade. Alessandro Michele made it maximalist from 2015. Sabato De Sarno stripped it back from 2023. Demna arrived from Balenciaga in 2025 to reset it again. Search interest moved with every one of those turns.
We hold Gucci to the standard it set itself in Florence. When the house leans on the leather, the horsebit and the archive, it makes some of the best-made objects in Italy. When it leans on the monogram alone, the results date faster.
Behind the brand
History of Gucci
Guccio Gucci worked as a porter at the Savoy in London, where he watched wealthy guests arrive with their luggage. He returned to Florence and opened a leather goods shop in 1921, selling saddlery and travel pieces to a city with a long tanning tradition. The equestrian trade left the marks the house still uses: the horsebit and the green-red-green web drawn from a saddle girth.
Wartime shortages forced the invention that became the signature. With leather restricted, Gucci turned to woven cane and produced the Bamboo bag in 1947, heating and bending the stalks by hand into a handle nobody else had. The Jackie followed in 1961 and took its name from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who was photographed carrying it for years.
The family fought itself into near-collapse by the 1980s. The Bahraini firm Investcorp bought the family out over the following years, and Tom Ford’s arrival in 1994 rebuilt the house on sharper, sexier clothes across a decade. Kering, then called PPR, took control in stages through the 2000s. Michele’s 2015 appointment made Gucci the fastest-growing brand in luxury for several years. The studio has changed hands twice since. That churn is why the ranking has stayed sensitive to Gucci.

The Gucci bags
Three archive bags anchor the range: the Bamboo 1947, the Jackie 1961 and the Horsebit 1955. Each carries a hardware detail that predates the current logo era by decades. That is why they hold value better than the seasonal releases. The GG Marmont and the Dionysus sell in far greater numbers and account for most of what you see on the street. We rank the full lineup in our guide to the best Gucci bags.
The Horsebit loafer, introduced in 1953, is one of the few designer shoes that has never left production, and it has sat in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1985.
Gucci fragrance
Fragrance is one of Gucci’s largest categories by volume, and three lines carry it. Bloom, launched in 2017, is a white floral built on tuberose and jasmine. Guilty, launched in 2010, is the pair of sharper, clubbier scents split into versions for men and women. Flora draws on a 1966 print that Rodolfo Gucci commissioned for Grace Kelly, redrawn as a range of lighter florals. The fragrance counter is the most accessible way in.
Gucci eyewear
Sunglasses are the other volume category, and they read Gucci from across a room. The house favors oversized acetate frames, gold GG hardware on the temple, and recurring motifs like the bee and the web stripe. Eyewear and fragrance are how most people own a piece of Gucci before they ever buy a bag.
Craftsmanship and materials
Gucci makes the majority of its leather goods in Italy, much of it in and around Florence and at the ArtLab facility in Scandicci, where prototyping, testing and craft training run under one roof. The bamboo handles are still shaped by hand over a flame, one at a time.
The house has also put real money behind traceability and recycled materials, and it reports under an environmental profit and loss account that Kering pioneered. We treat it as a signal rather than a verdict.
How to spot a real Gucci bag
Start inside. Genuine Gucci bags carry a heat-stamped logo and a serial number on an interior tag or leather patch, and the font is clean and evenly pressed. Check that the GG monogram lines up across seams and panels rather than running off at the edges, since alignment is the detail counterfeits get wrong first. Look closely at the hardware engraving and the stitching, both of which are precise on the real thing. None of this is foolproof, so the safest route is to buy from Gucci directly or from a reseller that authenticates before it sells.
Where to buy Gucci
Gucci sells through its own boutiques, its official site and a small set of authorized multi-brand retailers. The archive silhouettes hold their resale value best, so the secondhand market is a legitimate entry point for the Jackie and the Bamboo. For our current picks, start with the best Gucci bags and our wider best designer bags of all time.
Gucci is generally cheaper bought in Italy. It is an Italian house, so European retail prices run below the US and Asian equivalents, and non-EU visitors can reclaim part of the value-added tax on the way home.
Gucci price
Gucci prices in the upper-middle of the European houses. Small leather goods and belts open in the mid hundreds, the GG Marmont lands in the low-to-mid thousands, and the archive bags in exotic leathers climb well past that. The Horsebit loafer remains, to our eye, the best-value thing in the store. It costs a fraction of a bag, it can be resoled, and it has outlasted every trend cycle since 1953.
