Balenciaga
The couturier Dior called the master of us all, and the house that now runs on provocation and volume.
Balenciaga is a recurring name in our ranking of the most popular luxury brands online, and no house on the list divides opinion further. It is at once the most technically respected name in twentieth-century couture and the brand most likely to sell you a very expensive object that looks like something ordinary. The house is Spanish in origin and French in base, and Kering owns it today.
The pattern-cutting discipline Cristóbal built is what lets the house distort a shape without it collapsing.
Behind the brand
History of Balenciaga
Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his first house in San Sebastián in 1917 and moved to Paris in 1937 when the Spanish Civil War closed his Spanish operations. He was unusual among couturiers in that he could cut, sew and drape a garment entirely himself, and his peers deferred to him for it. Christian Dior called him the master of us all.
His work between the late 1940s and the 1960s dismantled the fitted silhouette. The barrel line, the balloon hem, the sack dress and the cocoon coat all moved fabric away from the body, and they still read as modern in a way most couture of the period does not. He closed the house in 1968 rather than adapt to ready-to-wear, and he died four years later.
The name was revived in the 1980s. Nicolas Ghesquière rebuilt its credibility from 1997 with a decade of technically demanding collections, Alexander Wang followed, and Demna took the studio in 2015 and pushed it toward streetwear, oversized proportions and deliberate provocation. In 2025 Demna left for Gucci and Pierpaolo Piccioli arrived from Valentino. His first collection turned the house back toward the elegance of its founder.

The Balenciaga collection
Footwear is what most people search for. The Triple S started the chunky-sneaker era in 2017, the Track and the Speed followed, and the Pool slides and the fur-lined Furry became memes in their own right. The house’s shoes drive as much conversation as its clothes.
The handbags split between the archive and the moment. The City defined the 2000s in soft distressed lambskin with its tassels and buckles, and it remains the most recognizable Balenciaga object. The Hourglass is the modern signature, structured where the City is slouchy, and the Le Cagole, the Neo Classic and the newer Rodeo complete the range. We rank them in our guide to the best Balenciaga bags.
Then there is the provocation. The house has sold a leather pouch shaped like a trash bag for $1,790 and a bracelet made to look like a roll of tape, and each one was built to get talked about. That instinct for spectacle is the modern house’s engine and its liability. It keeps Balenciaga in the conversation every season, and it has more than once tipped into a controversy the brand had to apologize for.
Craftsmanship and materials
The archive is a working reference rather than a museum. Cristóbal built volume into the cloth itself rather than propping it up underneath, and in 1958 he worked with the Swiss mill Abraham to invent silk gazar, a fabric stiff enough to hold a coat’s shape away from the body. That engineering instinct is what the archive still teaches the designers who follow him. Balenciaga returned to haute couture in 2021, fifty-three years after Cristóbal closed the doors. That put the house back among the few that still show it. It maintains its Paris ateliers, and its leather goods and footwear are made in Italy.
The City’s appeal rests on a specific lambskin treatment meant to soften and crease with use. It will not stay pristine, and it is not supposed to.
Where to buy Balenciaga
Balenciaga sells through its own stores, its official site, department stores and luxury etailers. Distribution is wide for a house at this price, so seasonal discounting through wholesale is common on ready-to-wear and footwear.
Balenciaga price
Balenciaga prices alongside Gucci and Saint Laurent, its Kering stablemates. Small leather goods and sneakers open in the mid hundreds, the City and the Hourglass land in the low-to-mid thousands, and couture is a different business entirely. The City is the piece with the longest track record and the one we would buy, precisely because it has already survived a full cycle of being out of fashion.
