Armani
The designer who took the structure out of the jacket in 1975, and one of the last great independents in Italian luxury.
Armani is the Italian luxury house Giorgio Armani founded in Milan in 1975, best known for taking the internal structure out of the tailored jacket and softening the shoulder. Almost every soft-shouldered suit sold today descends from what Armani did to the canvas, and it is why we rate it in our guide to the best suit brands for men.
The name now covers far more than tailoring. Armani spans full luxury, premium casualwear, one of the largest beauty and fragrance businesses in the world, furniture and hotels. Which Armani line a piece comes from decides what you are getting, because the three main tiers are not built to the same standard.
Armani is a fixture in our ranking of the most popular luxury brands online, carried there by fragrance, hotels and furniture as much as by clothes. The quiet-luxury turn suits a house that has made quiet clothes since 1975 and never adjusted its position to chase a trend.
Behind the brand
History of Armani
Giorgio Armani studied medicine, left, worked as a window dresser at La Rinascente in Milan, and then spent years designing menswear for Nino Cerruti. He founded his own company in 1975 with his partner Sergio Galeotti, reportedly funding it by selling a Volkswagen. Galeotti ran the business side until his death in 1985, after which Armani took full control of both the design and the company.
The first collections did something radical. Armani stripped the internal structure out of the men’s jacket, softened the shoulder, moved the buttons and used fabrics that had been reserved for womenswear. The result draped rather than held its shape. He then applied the same logic in reverse to women’s tailoring, borrowing the ease of menswear.
American Gigolo in 1980 put the jackets on screen. Armani dressed Richard Gere throughout the film, and the wardrobe is widely credited with introducing his soft tailoring to an American audience. Hollywood adopted the house for the next two decades, and Armani became the default red-carpet name.
Armani built out Emporio Armani, Armani Exchange, Armani Privé couture, Armani/Casa and a hotel business, and kept the whole thing independent throughout his life. Almost none of his Milanese contemporaries managed that. He led the company himself until his death in September 2025 at the age of 91. His will placed voting control with the Giorgio Armani Foundation and his life partner Pantaleo Dell’Orco, and it directed his heirs to sell a stake or pursue a public listing gradually over the following years, giving priority to a major luxury or beauty group.

The Armani lines explained
Giorgio Armani is the main line, home to the finest tailoring, evening wear and the greige palette the designer built his career on. Armani Privé is the house’s haute couture line, shown in Paris since 2005. Emporio Armani is the younger, sportier line at a lower price, marked by the eagle logo. Armani Exchange, or A|X, is the accessible end, priced as casual mass-market clothing.
Armani built a good deal more than clothing. Armani/Casa applies the same restraint to furniture and interiors. The beauty and fragrance range carries the scents most people know the name for, from Acqua di Gio to Stronger With You. Armani hotels operate in Dubai and Milan.
The tailoring is still the reason to come to Armani. If you are choosing between the lines for a suit, the main line is the one that carries the craft the house is known for.
Craftsmanship and materials
An Armani jacket is defined by what has been taken out of it. Removing the canvas and padding means the cloth has to carry the shape on its own. That forces fabric chosen for weight and drape rather than stiffness, and cutting that leaves no internal structure to hide behind. A poorly made unstructured jacket has nowhere to disguise its faults.
Main-line production stays largely in Italy across the group’s own facilities. The greige and navy palette is a deliberate commercial choice. It keeps a ten-year-old jacket looking current.
Armani beauty and fragrance
For most people, the first Armani purchase is a bottle rather than a jacket. The fragrance and beauty business is made under license by L’Oréal and is one of the largest in prestige, and it carries the searches that dominate the name. Acqua di Gio, launched in 1996, remains one of the best-known men’s scents in the world. Armani Code followed in 2004, and Stronger With You and My Way have become the newer pillars. Sì anchors the women’s side.
The beauty hero is the Luminous Silk Foundation, a long-running favorite that the house periodically reformulates and extends in shade range. None of this is the tailoring the label was built on, but it is where the brand reaches the widest audience, and it is the easiest way into the name.
Where to buy Armani
Armani sells through its own boutiques, its official site at armani.com, department stores and luxury etailers. The tiers are distributed differently. The Giorgio Armani main line concentrates in flagship stores, while Emporio Armani and Armani Exchange are far more widely available, including through dedicated A|X outlet stores. A low price almost always means Emporio or Exchange rather than the main line.
Armani price
Giorgio Armani tailoring runs into the low-to-mid thousands, Emporio Armani lands in the high hundreds, and Armani Exchange is priced as accessible casualwear. Fragrance and beauty are the volume business and the most affordable way into the name. If you want what Armani does best, save for one main-line jacket rather than buying three pieces from the diffusion lines.
