Neode debuts with the N01 First Edition, an architect-designed watch limited to 25 pieces

Neode, a new independent watch brand based in London, has unveiled its first watch: the N01 First Edition Pure Silver, limited to 25 pieces and priced at CHF 26,400 before taxes for the subscription. The brand was founded by Marius-Daniel Dumitrascu, an architect who stepped away from architecture entirely to develop the watch himself.

The name Neode comes from neod, an Old English word meaning desire and earnest endeavour. Dumitrascu took what is described as a 360-degree approach to the project, working directly with and visiting each specialist supplier involved, and personally photographing the finished watches rather than commissioning outside images.

The case construction comes from Voutilainen & Cattin, the case-making specialist that turned Dumitrascu's design into metal. The N01 measures 39.5mm across, 7.9mm thick and 45.5mm lug to lug, rising to 9.9mm with its domed sapphire crystal, and is made from Grade 5 titanium.

The case has a tonneau-like profile built from a double curvature that tapers toward the lugs, forming a continuous shaped structure around the movement. A recessed crown is inside a vertical cut in the case, with a matching cut on the opposite side purely for symmetry. Water resistance is 50m.

What the dial is built from

The silver dial comes from Les Cadraniers de Genève, a Geneva specialist known for its work with high-end independent brands, including its owner, F.P. Journe. We covered F.P. Journe's own first classic chronograph earlier this year, headed to a Singapore charity auction, from the same maison behind Neode's dial supplier.

Rather than conventional decoration, the dial relies on texture: narrow shadow gaps divide it into sectors, the central section and hour ring carry a hand-applied grenage finish for a granular, light-diffusing surface, and the recessed seconds ring is azuré with diamond-cut edges, while the raised minutes ring is brushed.

A recessed teal power-reserve indicator is at 12 o'clock within one of the shadow gaps, so discreet it nearly disappears when reserve is low. The hands are 18ct 210 grey gold with slate-grey ceramic Super-LumiNova inserts, and the 12, 3, 6 and 9 markers are cut from solid ceramic Super-LumiNova blocks rather than printed.

The movement behind the dial

Power comes from a heavily reworked version of the Chronode C101, developed with Jean-François Mojon and his team, described as one of the more interesting takes on that base. It is manually wound, just 3.98mm thick, and its twin independent mainspring barrels deliver a 192-hour, eight-day power reserve at 21,600 vibrations per hour.

Dumitrascu and Chronode substantially redesigned the movement's architecture, reworking the mainplate and bridges around a clear axis of symmetry and opening up the area around the balance. The result is a free-sprung balance with variable-inertia weights, visible through a sapphire caseback.

Independent watchmaking has drawn designers from outside horology before, including architects and industrial designers, but few have arrived with as clearly defined a visual language as Dumitrascu's, built from proportion, material and structural detail rather than surface decoration alone.

The watch is worn on an integrated rubber strap closed with a custom-designed folding buckle in titanium. Alternating circular and straight brushing, with mirror-polished lateral surfaces, is used across the case to emphasize the geometry Dumitrascu drew as an architect before he built anything in metal.

What the debut signals for the field

The suppliers behind the N01 carry considerable reputations without overwhelming the debut: Voutilainen & Cattin, Chronode and Les Cadraniers de Genève have each built theirs over decades working with other independent maisons, and Neode is leaning on that expertise rather than building every component alone.

Total production across the Neode range will stay below 100 watches a year, even as future versions of the N01 follow this Pure Silver edition. Deliveries of the first 25 pieces are scheduled for the second quarter of 2027, more than a year after the CHF 26,400 subscription opened.

That production ceiling puts Neode among a small group of debut brands choosing scarcity and specialist partnerships over rapid growth. Whether the N01's architectural language extends convincingly into a full collection, rather than a single striking watch, is the open question its coming pieces will have to answer.
