Kith and New Balance are bringing back the 2011 with a three-sneaker Monuments capsule that names New York's most familiar places without ever saying so outright. The pack lands Monday, November 9, priced at $200 a pair, with the Kith website, app and stores carrying it.
Each colorway is a tribute, though the source material is officially unnamed. The maroon, yellow and cream "Park" edition points to Central Park, the blue-and-silver "Banner" to the New York Knicks, and the green, lilac and fuchsia "Garden" to the New York Botanical Garden.
The 2011 first surfaced over the summer as the opening chapter of Kith's 15th-anniversary run, its name a direct nod to the year the retailer opened its doors. The trio now roots it in the home city of the boutique.
Kith built the upper from the ground up rather than adapting an existing New Balance last, assembling a layered, multi-piece pattern. Beneath it is the ABZORB midsole unit originally developed for the New Balance 2002, which gives a familiar, cushioned ride under a construction entirely its own.
Three colorways, three New York landmarks
The "Park" pair carries the deepest Kith lineage. Its pigskin suede and nubuck in maroon, yellow and cream revisit a Ronnie Fieg New Balance 530 from 2014, and the connection runs deeper than color: both shoes share a quilted vamp and collar.
Materials do the heavy lifting on the Park. Perforated nubuck forms the base, layered with more nubuck and leather overlays, while a debossed 2011 graphic spreads across the whole heel. Contrasting N-lock logos mark both sides, and flecks of silver in the laces add a faint shimmer.
The "Banner" edition continues a long Kith habit of dressing sneakers in Knicks colors. A silver mesh base lies beneath blue pigskin suede overlays, with more silver arriving in both suede and synthetic. Orange is held back for the N logo, the upper eyelet and an inset heel mark.
Perforated suede overlays over suede underlays give the "Amazon & Lilac" version its bolder color-blocked route. Its reflective N-logos on both walls catch light after dark, New Balance and Kith branding share the tongue and heel, and a co-branded 2011 mark runs at the outer ankle.
The "Princess Blue & Silver" swaps to a breathable mesh base with vibrant suede overlays, the cool palette cut through by orange accents at the eyelets, N-logos and heel branding, with 2011 detailing at the lateral heel.
WWD reports the "Garden" treatment has a grey and cream base with pops of green, lilac, yellow and fuchsia, the whole package combining mesh and pigskin suede. It is the one of the three with a restricted release footprint.
Where each pair actually releases
All three colorways are available on Kith's website and app. The "Park" and "Banner" pairs are also stocked in all Kith stores, while "Garden" is available in person only at the West Hollywood location. Each pair costs $200.
Every pair ships in New York to the World packaging, a special box carrying an illustrated map that adds still more local monuments, with an insole bearing the same graphic. A custom sockliner and an extra set of laces complete the package.
Kith has spent the year reworking familiar silhouettes. When we covered its adidas Stan Smith Ballet flat getting a suede winter makeover, the same instinct was at work: texture and finish rather than color alone. The Monuments pack continues that thread.
The collaboration also extends a busy New Balance season. We noted New Balance's 991v1 going half tweed, half leather for $254, and the 2011 shares the same willingness to let materials do the talking. This run is Kith's own silhouette, though.
The pricing and the single-store Garden release are the terms to note. Neither source gives an SKU or says whether more colorways will follow, so nothing is confirmed for after Monday's drop beyond the three pairs described here.
