Ford has unveiled the Frostwarden, a one-off Bronco that houses its most powerful crate engine yet: the Megazilla 2.0. The supercharged 7.3-liter V-8 churns out more than 1,200 horsepower and 1,000 ft lbs of torque, and it made its debut at this year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
For scale, a standard Bronco makes 300 hp, so the Frostwarden carries four times that figure in a single engine bay. To reach that output Ford fitted a stronger lock, upgraded pistons, larger fuel injectors, and swapped in a different belt drive and damper.
A Gen 6 Whipple supercharger is the heart of the engine, paired with a camshaft made specifically for supercharging. The result is a search-and-rescue vehicle meant to brave the elements on an Arctic trek, a build with a purpose beyond showing off.
A rescue rig on 42-inch tires
The Frostwarden rides on 42-inch BFGoodrich tires mounted to bespoke 18-inch Weld bead-lock wheels. The Bronco is lifted with 74Weld portal gear lifts and carries upgraded Dana driveline hardware, along with custom Bilstein dampers to keep all that grunt under control.
Rescue duty explains the rest of the gear. Off-road lights, a roof-mounted spare tire and an external gas tank join the black-and-yellow livery, the kind of additions a working vehicle needs and a show truck rarely bothers with.
That two-tone design carries into the cabin, where black and yellow cover every inch, from the seats to the Megazilla embossing stamped into the steering wheel. Nothing about the truck lets anyone forget the engine it was built around.
The Frostwarden is a one-off and will not be sold. Ford is using the build to demonstrate the creations it can craft around its engines, which means the Megazilla 2.0 itself is the real product here, with the Bronco as its rolling billboard.
The engine is the story
Crate engines are a way of selling power without the car around it, and the Megazilla 2.0 is Ford's most powerful example so far. The Frostwarden is simply the first home it has been shown in.
Ford has plenty on the horizon for the Bronco line. Rumors this summer pointed to a Bronco pickup truck in the works, and the automaker paired with outdoor outfitter Filson earlier this year on a retro-inspired Bronco running the twin-turbo 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 from the Raptor.
In our coverage of style, horsepower-led one-offs like this one include Karma's Eximius 1, a hybrid sedan with a 6.2-liter V-8 and 1,195 hp. The Frostwarden's 1,200 hp edges just past it, though the two builds serve very different briefs.
Pagani's Huayra 70 Anima, a one-off we covered, leans on diamond-infused paint rather than raw output. Where the Italian car sells elegance at a hypercar price, the Frostwarden spends its power on clearing snow and hauling rescue kit.
Our guide to electric pickup trucks puts the Rivian R1T first, for its 420 miles of range and a quad-motor version making 1,025 hp. In the same guide, Ford is replacing the F-150 Lightning with a 700-mile range extender.
On the hybrid side, our guide to the best hybrid pickup trucks found the F-150 PowerBoost towing 12,700 lbs with a 7.2 kW generator in the bed. The Frostwarden is the opposite extreme: raw crate-engine power aimed at an off-road challenge.
Ford has not said when the Megazilla 2.0 goes on sale or what it will cost. For now the one-off Frostwarden carries the message, and the engine's real arrival among builders and tuners is a step the automaker has yet to announce.
The Frostwarden's livery is the kind that photographs well at SEMA and matters in a storm, when a rescue vehicle has to be spotted from a distance. Ford gave it tooling to match, from bead-lock wheels to the external tank.
