The Macallan has released the fifth and final whisky in its A Night on Earth series, a single malt called the Finale that pays tribute to New Orleans. It closes a collection launched to mark the different ways people around the world welcome the New Year.
The series previously covered Scotland, the Journey, Jerez de la Frontera and, most recently, the First Light. The Finale arrives before the end of 2026, the last installment in a line The Macallan has built as an annual celebration of New Year traditions.
What is in the bottle
The liquid was aged in a combination of sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks, a specification that applies to many of the distillery's single malts. It was bottled at 43 percent ABV, or 86 proof, with no color added to the whisky.
The distillery says rich sweetness from the sherry-seasoned American oak is balanced by warming spice from the European oak casks, which it describes as honoring New Orleans' culinary heritage and cocktail culture. The flavor is framed through the city rather than built from it.
As with the rest of the series, the New Orleans connection lives mainly in the design and packaging rather than the liquid inside. There is no cajun spice or beignet influence in the whisky itself, and we have not tasted it, since no sample was supplied.
The Macallan worked with New Orleans-born artist Hill Spriggins on the outer packaging, which is meant to evoke the spirit and culture of the Big Easy. Spriggins created three separate pieces of art that come together in what the distillery calls a multi-stage unboxing experience.
Spriggins describes the three works as reflecting the sounds, colors and memories that define New Orleans for her. The design is the part of this release that carries the city, while the single malt beneath it stays a Macallan built on sherry-seasoned oak.
The Finale carries a suggested retail price of $125 and is on sale now through the brand's website and the Macallan Estate Boutique. That makes it a modest special edition within a collection that has become a recurring fixture for collectors of annual releases.
Creative director Jaume Ferras framed the closing installment around the city's character. In a statement he called A Night on Earth a cherished collection celebrating New Year traditions from around the world, and said ending on New Orleans is fitting because of the city's creativity, resilience and sense of community.
The Macallan at auction and on shelves
The Macallan is the brand at the top of the auction record for rare whisky, and it is the name our own records point to when we cover the most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold. That record shapes how the distillery is priced and collected.
When we rounded up the most expensive whiskies ever sold, the top spot belonged to a bottle of The Macallan 1926, which went for £2,187,500 at Sotheby's in London in November 2023. No bottle of spirits or wine has beaten it at auction since.
The Finale is far beneath those auction heights, and that is the point of it. This is a series built on drinkable, regularly priced annual editions, and the $125 asking price keeps it within reach of buyers who collect the A Night on Earth line bottle by bottle.
The Macallan is a Speyside single malt distillery whose sherry-cask maturation has defined its house style for decades. Its bottlings are at the top of the whisky market, and collectors and drinkers both track what it releases in any given year.
For a distillery that puts out a large volume of releases every year, the closing of a series is a moment that stands apart. The Finale is not just another special edition arriving before the year ends but the end of a line, a point that matters to collectors.
In our coverage of dining and spirits, the Macallan consistently appears among the names we point to when discussing whisky at its most collectible. The A Night on Earth series is a different register from that world, and its finale matters most to buyers who have followed the set.
With the Finale now on shelves, the A Night on Earth series is complete. The Macallan has not said what will follow it, so the next special edition in its release calendar is the thing to watch once the New Year arrives.
