The one-of-one Marvel Infinity Gauntlet replica built by East Continental Gems goes under the hammer for the first time on December 8. It is a headline lot of Julien's Auctions' Pop Culture Legends sale, held at Rosewood Abu Dhabi, and it has never been offered for sale before.
What sets this gauntlet apart from every other replica is the stones. Most gems sold today have been treated to improve color or clarity. None of the six in this piece has been touched, and Julien's Auctions suggests that combination may never come together again. Each gem corresponds to one of the Infinity Stones.
The standout is the emerald standing in for the Time Stone. First unearthed more than 100 years ago, the stone stayed in East Continental Gems' own collection for over three decades. The house repeatedly refused to sell it before finally releasing it for this project.
The construction traces back to Marvel's own blueprints. The studio opened the layered design files behind the screen-used gauntlet, letting the New York jeweler reproduce the prop's form faithfully while substituting precious stones for the fabricated ones used in the film.
East Continental Gems is a family business that has worked out of the same New York office since 1972. The project began in 2019, when CEO Adam Mirzoeff spotted a toy Infinity Gauntlet on a senior Marvel executive's desk and floated, mostly as a joke, the idea of building a real one.
The finished piece was later shown publicly at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022. The job of translating each fictional stone into a real-world counterpart fell to the jeweler, which worked from the studio's design files rather than from photographs or licensed merchandise.
Winning a paddle takes more than signing up. Julien's Auctions makes every bidder clear pre-approval before the December 8 sale, and the house is asking collectors to get in touch early. The piece also tours Bahrain throughout November, ahead of the Abu Dhabi sale.
The sale itself is titled Pop Culture Legends, and the gauntlet is a headline lot of Julien's Auctions' Celebrity & Culture Experience. That puts a Marvel object built to jeweler's standards in front of Gulf collectors on two fronts, the Bahrain tour and the Abu Dhabi room.
"Presenting it in Abu Dhabi, as part of Pop Culture Legends auction, gives it a stage worthy of what it is: a true 1-of-1," Julien's Auctions CEO Ken Citron said in a statement. The house has positioned the gauntlet as the sale's flagship piece.
What is actually on the gauntlet
Every one of the six stones is matched to an Infinity Stone, and the emerald for the Time Stone is the jewel the house held longest. All six are described as untouched, meaning none has been treated or enhanced to improve its color or clarity.
That is the rarity argument behind the sale. Untreated gemstones in the sizes a full gauntlet needs rarely line up, and Julien's Auctions has suggested the pairing may not be repeated. The house has not published an estimate or a figure.
The gauntlet is a sculpture as much as a jewel, shown on a display plinth rather than made to be worn. East Continental Gems engineered it from the studio's layered files, which meant reproducing the prop's exact proportions rather than an artist's impression.
The difference between treated and untreated stones is the same one we walk through in our guide to gem grading and the 4Cs. An untreated stone of this scale trades on scarcity that enhancement erases, and six of them together is the house's pitch.
Other one-of-one lots we have covered
We have followed the upper end of the collectibles market closely, from the Ferrari F50 with 106 miles that carried a $20 million-plus estimate to a 27-litre Liber Pater bottle leading a Bonhams sale with an estimate of up to $1 million. This gauntlet belongs to that bracket.
The pop-culture angle is the difference, and our coverage of scene has touched it through the most expensive guitars and the most valuable vinyl records ever sold. A Marvel prop built to jeweler's standards is where those worlds meet, which is why the sale is called Pop Culture Legends.
