Loro Piana
A wool merchant since the 1800s, and the house that buys the finest fibers in the world before anyone else can.
Loro Piana is the Italian luxury house that sells the finest natural fibers in the world, and it is the quietest and most expensive brand of its kind per gram. It is also the least likely to be recognized across a room. There is no logo on most of what it makes, and the recognition signal is the fabric itself.
We include it among the best quiet luxury brands because it is the source rather than an imitator. Several of the houses on that list buy their cloth from this one.
Behind the brand
History of Loro Piana
The Loro Piana family has traded wool in northern Italy since the early 1800s. Pietro Loro Piana formally established the company in 1924 in Quarona, in the Sesia valley, and his nephew Franco built the modern business after the Second World War by selling Italian cloth to the great tailoring houses of the world.
The decisive move came in the 1970s and 1980s under Sergio and Pier Luigi Loro Piana, who went directly to the sources of the world’s rarest fibers. They worked with Peruvian authorities to help restart a regulated vicuña trade tied to herd protection, and they secured supplies of baby cashmere from Mongolia and northern China. Those relationships still give the house first access to material almost no competitor can obtain.
That vertical position, from fiber to finished garment, is what the business rests on. LVMH acquired a majority stake in 2013 in a deal reported at around two billion euros, and the family retains a minority holding. The French ownership is why some shoppers ask whether the brand is French, but Loro Piana is Italian and is still run from Italy.
The fibers
Loro Piana is best understood as a fiber house that happens to make clothes, so the materials come first. Vicuña is the rarest, taken from a wild Andean camelid that can be shorn only every two years and yields a few hundred grams each time. That scarcity is why a vicuña coat costs more than most cars. Baby cashmere is combed from Hircus goat kids on their first molt, finer than adult cashmere, at roughly thirty grams per animal. The house also runs competitions for the finest bale of merino and the finest lengths of superfine wool, giving it the pick of each year’s clip.
The Loro Piana collection
Knitwear and outerwear are the core. The Roadster and Icer jackets, the Storm System weatherproofed cashmere, the cashmere sweaters and the Open Walk and Summer Walk shoes are the house’s permanent objects. We cover the knitwear category in our guide to the best cashmere sweaters for women.
The Summer Walk suede loafer has become the brand’s most visible product, a faint irony for a house built on invisibility. It sells for around a thousand dollars, carries hand-stitched detailing and no logo, and picked up the billionaire-loafer nickname on its way to becoming a quiet-luxury signature. The soft leather bags, led by the Extra Pocket pouch and the Bale, have followed the same path from insider object to widely searched product.

Craftsmanship and materials
Loro Piana controls its supply chain end to end. It buys the raw fiber, then washes, combs, spins, weaves and finishes it in its own mills in Italy before making the garments. Very few luxury companies of any size do all of this, and it is why the house can work with vicuña at all.
Storm System is a wind and water-resistant treatment bonded to cashmere or wool, so a coat behaves like outerwear without looking like it. That combination of natural fiber and technical finishing is the house’s clearest signature.
The 2025 labor case
In July 2025 a Milan court placed Loro Piana under judicial administration for a year, after finding that its production had been subcontracted down a chain ending in a workshop that employed undocumented workers in illegal conditions. Loro Piana said the supplier had concealed the subcontractors, that it cut ties within 24 hours of learning of them, and that it condemns any illegal practices. The court lifted the measure early, crediting the audits and supervision the company put in place across its supply chain.
Why Loro Piana is everywhere now
For a house built on invisibility, Loro Piana has become unusually visible. The quiet-luxury turn of the last few years, pushed along by the wardrobe of the television series Succession, sent shoppers looking for logo-free clothes that signal money only to people who already know. Loro Piana is the purest version of that idea, so the attention landed here.
The Summer Walk did the rest. Once the loafer picked up the billionaire-loafer nickname, search interest in the brand climbed well beyond its traditional buyers, and the bags followed. A brand whose whole point is that you cannot tell what it costs is now one of the most recognized names in luxury.
Where to buy Loro Piana
Loro Piana sells through its own boutiques, its official site at loropiana.com and a small number of luxury retailers. The house rarely discounts, so a heavy markdown is a reason to check authenticity rather than a bargain. Made-to-measure and interiors are handled through the flagship stores.
Loro Piana price
This is the most expensive brand in our directory by material. A cashmere sweater runs into four figures, the Summer Walk shoes to around a thousand dollars, and a vicuña coat into the tens of thousands. The value argument, when there is one, is durability. A Storm System coat or a baby cashmere sweater is bought once and worn for a decade.
