Moncler
Alpine expedition kit from 1952 that became a city uniform, and the brand that turned a puffer into a luxury object.
Moncler is a luxury outerwear house founded in France in 1952 and now headquartered in Milan, best known for the down puffer jacket it turned into a luxury object. It got there by way of genuine expedition equipment rather than styling. The company outfitted the 1954 Italian K2 expedition and the French national ski team, and the construction of its jackets still reflects that.
The real question with Moncler is whether you are paying for the down or for the badge. Our answer is that the entry-level pieces lean toward the badge and the technical Grenoble line leans toward the down.
Behind the brand
History of Moncler
René Ramillon and André Vincent founded the company in 1952 in Monestier-de-Clermont, near Grenoble, making quilted sleeping bags, tents and hooded jackets for mountain workers. The name is a contraction of the village.
The turn came when the mountaineer Lionel Terray asked for kit that could handle serious altitude. Moncler equipped the Italian K2 expedition in 1954 and the French expedition to Makalu in 1955, and became the official supplier to the French alpine team at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics.
The jackets crossed into everyday wear through Italian youth subcultures in the 1980s. Remo Ruffini acquired the company in 2003, moved it to Milan, and repositioned it as a luxury brand. Moncler listed publicly in 2013 and bought Stone Island in a deal announced in December 2020, valuing the smaller Italian label at around 1.15 billion euros.
The Moncler collection
The Maya and the Hermine are the archetypal down jackets, in the glossy nylon laqué that reads as Moncler from across a street. The gilet, or down vest, is the quiet volume-seller, and the ribbed logo beanie is the most affordable way into the house. Moncler Grenoble is the technical mountain line and the one that still answers to the original brief.
Moncler Genius is the other half of the modern brand. Ruffini launched it in 2018 to replace the seasonal runway with a rolling calendar of collaborations, each designed by an outside name and dropped on its own schedule. The Palm Angels, adidas Originals and Rick Owens runs are the ones that move fastest, and they are what keeps a house founded in 1952 current with a younger buyer. Stone Island, the other label in the group, is a separate and more technical brand rather than a Moncler sub-line.
We cover the house against its rivals in our guides to the best winter coats for men and the best winter coats for women.

Down and construction
Down is the whole product. Fill power measures how much space a given weight of down fills, so a higher figure means more warmth for less weight. Moncler uses high fill-power goose down and, since 2015, traces and certifies all of it under its own DIST protocol, short for Down Integrity System and Traceability. The standard covers how the birds are raised, in a category with a poor historical record. The jackets are made in Europe, and the sewn quilting channels are what keep the down from migrating and leaving cold spots.
The house also runs a repair and reconditioning service, and the down can be refreshed. That service is the main reason a well-kept Moncler jacket lasts as long as it does. Spot-clean the shell and have the jacket professionally cleaned. Machine-washing flattens the down.
Moncler sizing
Moncler sizing confuses more buyers than any other part of the brand, because it uses numbers instead of letters. Size 1 is a small, 2 a medium, 3 a large, 4 an extra large and 5 an XXL. The cut runs slim and fairly short, so a lot of people size up one number, either for a relaxed silhouette or to fit a layer underneath. Try the Maya and the Hermine on before you commit, since the fitted shells leave little margin.
Where to buy Moncler
Moncler sells through its own stores, its official site, department stores and luxury etailers. The brand is among the most counterfeited in all of outerwear, so buy through official channels or an authenticating reseller. Each jacket carries a serial-numbered tag with a QR code that links to Moncler’s own authentication page, and that is the first thing to check on any resale piece.
Moncler price
Moncler prices well above technical outdoor brands and roughly alongside luxury ready-to-wear. A gilet starts in the high hundreds and a full down jacket runs into the thousands. Part of that price buys real material, the high fill-power down and the traceable sourcing, and part of it buys the badge and the near-total control Moncler keeps over its own distribution. The brand rarely discounts and does not run the end-of-season sales its rivals do. That holds resale value up, and it also means you almost never buy one at a discount.
If you want warmth-to-weight performance, the Grenoble line earns its price on specification. If you want the jacket everyone recognizes, that is a different purchase.
