Prada
The Milanese house that made industrial nylon a luxury material and has never stopped arguing with good taste.
Prada is an Italian luxury house founded in Milan in 1913, and it is the flagship of the Prada Group. It shows up in our ranking of the most popular luxury brands online every year, and it is the house that most consistently gets there through ideas rather than volume. Miuccia Prada has spent four decades making clothes that look, on first pass, slightly wrong, and then become the thing everyone copies two seasons later.
We rate Prada for a specific reason. Prada treats an unfashionable material as an opportunity rather than a compromise, and the nylon backpack is the proof.
Behind the brand
History of Prada
Mario Prada opened Fratelli Prada in Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in 1913, selling leather goods, trunks and imported English steamer bags. In 1919 the company was named an official supplier to the Italian Royal Household. The warrant earned Prada the right to put the House of Savoy coat of arms and knotted rope in its emblem. Those elements still sit on the Prada logo today. Mario is said to have believed women had no place in business. The company passed instead to his daughter Luisa and then, in 1978, to his granddaughter Miuccia.
Miuccia had a doctorate in political science and had trained in mime. She took a small luggage company and, in 1984, released a black backpack in Pocono nylon, an industrial fabric her grandfather had used to line trunks. It cost as much as leather and sold on the strength of being deliberately unglamorous. That bag built the modern house. Her husband and business partner Patrizio Bertelli ran the commercial side and pushed the company from a single Milan store to a global one.
Ready-to-wear followed in 1988, Miu Miu in 1993, and Fondazione Prada gave the company a permanent presence in contemporary art. The group listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2011. Raf Simons joined Miuccia as co-creative director in 2020, an arrangement with no real precedent at this level. In 2025 the Prada Group agreed to buy Versace from Capri Holdings for 1.25 billion euros and completed the deal that December, adding its Milanese opposite to the house.

The Prada collection
The nylon backpack and its descendants remain the house signature, now made in Re-Nylon. The Galleria, in cross-hatched Saffiano calfskin, is the structured counterpart and the bag most likely to survive a working week without complaint. The Cleo, the Re-Edition 2005 and the Moon fill out a lineup we cover in our guide to the best Prada bags. The brushed-leather loafers and chunky-soled derbies have been in continuous rotation for years.
The enameled metal triangle is the mark that ties the range together. Prada uses it in place of a loud logo, a small inverted plaque on a bag, a shoe or a nylon pocket. It is the quietest house signature in luxury and the most copied.
Prada eyewear
Sunglasses and optical frames are Prada’s highest-volume category, and they carry the house’s design argument in miniature. The Symbole line and the geometric acetate shapes read as Prada without a visible logo, while the Linea Rossa sport range puts the red stripe on wraparound frames. For most buyers, eyewear is the first Prada object they own.
Prada fragrance
Fragrance is the other large accessible category. Paradoxe, launched in 2022 with Emma Watson as its face, is the women’s pillar and comes in a refillable bottle. L’Homme and La Femme, both from 2016, are the clean, powdery mainstays. Luna Rossa, named for Prada’s America’s Cup sailing team, is the men’s sport line and one of the house’s steadiest sellers.
Craftsmanship and materials
Saffiano is the house’s signature material. It is calfskin pressed with a cross-hatch and sealed with wax, and the treatment makes it resist scratching and water in a way smooth calf does not. If you want a designer bag that can be carried daily without visible anxiety, Saffiano is the answer.
Prada manufactures largely in Italy, across its own factories in Tuscany, Umbria and the Marche. The Re-Nylon program converted the house’s nylon products to regenerated yarn made from recycled waste, including reclaimed fishing nets and textile scrap. That is a concrete commitment rather than a stated ambition.
Where to buy Prada
Prada sells through its own stores, its official site and a set of authorized luxury retailers. Saffiano pieces are the ones we would buy without hesitation. For the full range and our current picks, see the best Prada bags.
Prada price
Prada prices below Chanel and Dior and roughly alongside Gucci. Re-Nylon bags start in the low four figures, the Galleria runs higher by size, and small leather goods open in the high hundreds. The nylon pieces are the value play. They cost less than the leather, they shrug off rain, and they have been in the collection long enough that nobody will read them as a passing trend.
