Versace
Italian maximalism with a Medusa head on it, and the house that has always understood a red carpet better than a boardroom.
Versace is an Italian luxury house founded in Milan in 1978 by Gianni Versace, and since December 2025 it has been owned by the Prada Group. It is a consistent presence in our ranking of the most popular luxury brands online, and it punches far above its size on engagement. The house has never traded on subtlety. In a market where most brands have spent five years turning the volume down, that leaves it with a lane of its own.
We do not pretend Versace is a quiet-luxury brand. It is deliberately the opposite.
Behind the brand
History of Versace
Gianni Versace grew up in Reggio Calabria watching his mother run a dressmaking business, and moved north to Milan in the early 1970s to design for other labels. He founded his own house in 1978 and staged his first show at the Palazzo della Permanente.
His contribution was less a silhouette than an attitude. He put classical motifs on club clothes, developed a metal mesh called Oroton that draped like fabric, and in 1991 helped build the supermodel era by paying the day’s top models to close one show together. The safety-pin dress Elizabeth Hurley wore in 1994 did more for the brand than any campaign of the decade.
Gianni was murdered outside his Miami Beach mansion in 1997. Donatella took the creative direction and held it for more than two decades, keeping the codes intact while steering the house from wholesale toward direct retail. Capri Holdings, the former Michael Kors group, acquired the company in 2018. Dario Vitale took the studio in 2025, and later that year the Prada Group bought Versace from Capri and installed Lorenzo Bertelli as executive chairman.

The Versace collection
The Medusa head and the Greca border are the two marks you will find on nearly everything, from the La Medusa handbag to the swim shorts and the home textiles. Barocco prints, gold hardware and safety-pin detailing complete the vocabulary.
The house’s evening wear remains its strongest category and the reason it keeps appearing on award-show carpets. The green silk chiffon jungle dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards is the clearest proof of that pull. It drove so many searches for a photo that Google built Image Search partly in response, launching the product in 2001. Versace also runs a hospitality arm, with Palazzo Versace properties that extend the aesthetic to entire buildings.
Versace eyewear
Sunglasses and optical frames are a major category and the most affordable way into the brand. The Medusa hinge, the Greca temple and bold gold detailing make the frames read Versace on sight. Eyewear, alongside fragrance, is where most people own the brand before they ever buy the clothes.
Versace fragrance
Fragrance is Versace’s largest business by search, larger than the clothes and the accessories combined. Eros, launched in 2012, is the men’s flagship and one of the best-selling designer scents in the world, a warm blend of mint, green apple, tonka bean and vanilla wrapped in a Medusa-embossed bottle. Its flankers, Eros Flame and Eros Energy, push the same idea warmer and fresher. Bright Crystal, from 2006, is the women’s counterpart, a lighter floral of pomegranate, peony and magnolia. Dylan Blue, Pour Homme and Eau Fraîche round out the men’s core with cooler, sharper profiles. For most people, a Versace bottle is the first and most-owned piece of the brand, and it is the category the house sells in the greatest volume.
Craftsmanship and materials
Versace produces in Italy, and the technical work behind the flash is better than the brand’s reputation suggests. Oroton mesh, developed under Gianni, is a chainmail-like metal fabric that moves like silk, and it is still one of the more difficult materials in fashion to cut and finish.
The prints are the other craft. Barocco and Greca engravings are scaled and placed so the pattern lines up across seams and panels. That is fussy work, and it is immediately obvious when it is done badly.
Where to buy Versace
Versace sells through its own boutiques, its official site and a broad wholesale network that includes major department stores and luxury etailers. That wholesale reach makes seasonal discounting common. Few houses at this price level discount at all. Fragrance, eyewear and accessories are the accessible entry points, and the fragrance in particular is widely stocked below boutique price.
Versace price
Versace prices in the middle of the Italian houses. Belts, eyewear and swim start in the mid hundreds, handbags in the low thousands, and evening wear runs far higher. Because the brand discounts through wholesale, the end-of-season market is genuinely worth watching. Buy the pieces where the print alignment and the hardware are doing the work, since that is where the money went.
