Range Rover Sport Electric arrives with 542 hp and 373 miles of range

JLR has unveiled the Range Rover Sport Electric, the all-electric version of its performance-oriented SUV. Two electric motors produce 542 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, and the estimated range is up to 373 miles, or 600 kilometers, on a single charge.

Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in select markets in the first quarter of 2027. The awkward part for American buyers is that the electric model will not be available in the US for the 2027 model year, and the source gives no later date.

The SUV uses an updated version of the Modular Longitudinal Architecture Flex platform, known as MLA-Flex. It draws power from a 118.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an 800-volt electrical system, which is what makes the charging figures possible.

With Dynamic Launch Control engaged, the Range Rover Sport Electric reaches 62 mph from standstill in 4.5 seconds. That matches the supercharged V8 model, so leaving internal combustion behind does not cost the Sport any of its straight-line force.

How fast it charges

The Range Rover Sport Electric supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kW. At peak rate the battery goes from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes, and a 10-minute stop adds up to 137 miles of range.

Bentley's first electric car is the obvious comparison. When we covered the Torcal, it arrived with 876 hp and 375 miles of range, against 542 hp and 373 miles here: two miles apart on range, far apart on output.

Bentley has spent its electric budget on output. Range Rover has spent its on capability, along with a lower, stiffer body, and the source gives no figure for how much the car weighs.

What changes in the way it drives

A dense battery pack in place of an engine changes the physics. JLR says the center of gravity is 2.8 inches lower than in the plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport, and the body structure is 61 percent stiffer than that car.

That stiffness works alongside all-wheel steering, Dynamic Air Suspension and Active Roll Control. Twin valve dampers are inside an adaptive system that checks 100 separate parameters 500 times every second, and it uses them to hold body roll and pitch in check.

The result is meant to be a planted handling profile despite a heavy luxury footprint. Electronic feedback is what creates that feel, according to the release material, which stops short of giving a curb weight for the car.

Visually the silhouette stays true to the brand's design language. The changes are subtle aerodynamic updates, including a modified grille design and unique alloy wheels. Nobody will mistake it for anything but a Range Rover.

Without a traditional exhaust note, engineers developed a dedicated soundscape for the vehicle. JLR describes the aim as blurring the lines between music and engineering, though it has not said how the sound changes with speed or drive mode.

Off-road credentials and trims

The Range Rover Sport Electric remains off-road capable. To test grip on slippery surfaces and steep inclines, the manufacturer took it to open-air Carrara marble quarries in Italy. It wades through up to 35.4 inches of water and tackles 45-degree inclines.

It will be sold in Dynamic HSE and Autobiography trims. Choosing the Autobiography tier gives access to Range Rover's Bespoke commissioning service, the route for buyers who want to specify their car beyond the standard options.
