The Johnnie Walker Vault has its first permanent whisky. Diageo released the prestige blend this month, built around two different whiskies from Brora Distillery in the Highlands, including spirit casked before the site was mothballed in 1983.
Master blender Dr Emma Walker calls the whisky "my love letter to Scotland," a hand-selected blend of what she describes as the country's most exceptional whiskies. That list includes single malts from ghost distilleries and contemporary malts never before used in a Johnnie Walker blend.
The two Brora components bookend the distillery's story. The first was laid down before production stopped in 1983, when the Sutherland site was mothballed. The second comes from casks Diageo filled following the distillery's revival 38 years later, in 2021.
Johnnie Walker Vault carries a price of £1,100, about US$1,500, per bottle, and is bottled at 43.8% ABV. It is sold exclusively at Harrods in London, The Johnnie Walker Experience in Edinburgh, and online through justerinis.com.
The tasting notes read as deliberately nostalgic. On the nose, butterscotch and salted caramel give way to what the notes call summer in the Highlands: wildflowers, green hills, fragrant barley, toasted oak and driftwood bonfire.
The palate brings vanilla, chopped almonds, frangipane tarte and Scottish raspberries. Tropical fruit, a trace of incense, charred oak and malty sweetness follow, with vintage leather and tobacco lingering at the edges.
The finish is described as structured, with apricot and sweet raspberry, a hint of crème anglaise balanced by gentle warming spices, and what the blender calls rich complexity. The notes name no age statement for any of the whiskies inside.
The Vault platform launched in March 2025 as what Diageo called the blended Scotch brand's most ambitious expression of blending artistry. It houses 500 whiskies from the brand's rare, aged and ghost casks, personally curated and rotated by Walker.
What Brora brings to the blend
Brora is on the eastern coast of Sutherland. Its pre-1983 stock is the headline of this release: a closed-era Highland whisky blended into a permanent Johnnie Walker rather than sold as a one-off single malt.
In 2017 Diageo pledged £35 million, around US$46 million, to restart production at Brora, a project that also included the revival of Islay's Port Ellen. The 2021 cask in the Vault was filled after that reopening.
The Vault has not stayed quiet since its launch. It previously released a collection of couture whiskies with Olivier Rousteing, the French fashion designer and creative director of Balmain, taking the blending house into luxury fashion.
Walker framed the project around place. "Johnnie Walker Vault is what I've called my love letter to Scotland, a truly special country to which I hold a deep connection," she said. "The creation of this whisky is my way to express that."
Our guide to the best whisky brands names Johnnie Walker Blue Label among the picks for value and everyday drinking, alongside Macallan 12 Year Double Cask, with Glenmorangie Signet as our overall choice. The Vault bottle is priced well beyond that tier.
What the permanent status changes
A permanent place in the Vault marks a shift for a platform that has so far released collaborations such as the Rousteing couture whiskies. Diageo has not said whether the Brora blend becomes a recurring bottle or a fixed addition to the range.
Distribution is narrow: a Knightsbridge department store, the brand's own Edinburgh venue and the Justerinis website. The online route puts the bottle within reach of buyers who never visit either physical space.
Johnnie Walker is best known for blended Scotch, and the Vault extends that house style into territory usually held by single-cask collectors, where provenance and a closed distillery's name help carry a price of £1,100.
Diageo has not disclosed how many bottles it will release, or whether the quantity of pre-1983 Brora spirit in the blend is limited. Those figures would show how permanent a bottle built on finite closed-distillery stock can be.
