Atelier Vivier, Roger Vivier's made-to-order service, makes its U.S. debut at Saks Fifth Avenue from Oct. 19 through 31. Housed in the retailer's Fifth Avenue Club, the experience runs through private appointments only. It lets American clients commission the Parisian house's signature shoes and handbags.

Marco Felci, chief executive officer of Tod's Group Americas, framed the move around that clientele. "Our clients in the United States value individuality and a personal connection to the Maison," he said, adding that the service lets the house combine savoir-faire with each client's personal style.

The program was introduced earlier this year at Roger Vivier's new flagship at 20 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. At that debut, clients could work across 28 shoe styles and seven handbag styles, which together offered more than 1,000 possible combinations of materials, colors and finishes.

The house was founded in Paris in 1937, and its founder approached footwear as an object of invention. Roger Vivier became known for experiments in form, materials and heel shapes, a vocabulary the current creative director, Gherardo Felloni, continues to mine today. Customization extends that instinct.

How the Atelier Vivier cabinet works

The process starts from a silhouette and a buckle, then moves through materials including satin, leather, patent and suede, along with colors and finishes. The signature buckle can be rendered in gold or silver, and select styles also offer colored brass for the hardware.

Personal marks are part of the menu. Clients can add their initials or a lucky number, either on the insole of a shoe or on a plaque inside a handbag, so the customization reaches the object itself and not only its surface.

The available materials and hardware sit in the Atelier Vivier MTO cabinet, a silver console. A digital component runs alongside it, allowing clients to visualize their combinations before production begins. The piece is then made around a single client's selections.

The service carries a price. In Paris, made-to-order pieces command a premium of up to 20 percent, and they are delivered within three months. The source does not give New York pricing or lead times, so the Paris terms are the only ones confirmed.

What the New York residency changes

The Saks residency is the first time Atelier Vivier appears in the U.S., and it is short: 13 days of appointments in the Fifth Avenue Club. The service is also set to begin expanding to select Roger Vivier boutiques worldwide, though no locations or dates were given.

Felci's remarks point to the strategy. Tod's Group Americas is treating made-to-order as a relationship tool in the U.S. market, and private appointments suit that aim. In his words, it allows the house to deepen that relationship with clients.

Felci also described the goal as making an iconic Roger Vivier creation uniquely her own. The phrasing is aimed at women clients and at the house's established silhouettes, which are the starting point for every commission rather than a blank page.

Roger Vivier is a Parisian footwear house, and its buckle remains the element most associated with it. Allowing that buckle to be finished in gold, silver or, on certain styles, colored brass gives clients a way to personalize the most recognizable detail.

The range is deliberately bounded. Twenty-eight shoe styles and seven handbag styles mean the offer is weighted heavily toward footwear, the house's founding craft. Within that frame, the 1,000 or so combinations let each client arrive at a pairing few others will own.

We follow launches like this one in our coverage of scene and style, and the pattern is familiar: a house takes a service once reserved for its home city and tests it on a department store floor before rolling it out more widely.

What happens after October 31 has not been stated. The source says only that the service begins expanding to select boutiques, so any further U.S. appointments, additional cities or changes to the Paris terms remain to be announced by Roger Vivier.
