Baltic has launched a new Hermétique edition tied to The Rift, the gravel cycling race it now times as Official Timekeeper. The event runs across southern Iceland at the seam of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, where close to 900 riders take on volcanic trails.
The Hermétique The Rift arrives in two sizes: the established 37mm and a new, more compact 34mm that broadens the line for smaller wrists. Both cases are fully brushed 316L stainless steel and measure 10.8mm thick, or 8.3mm without the double-domed sapphire crystal.
A polished bezel breaks up the utilitarian brushed finish. The integrated crown lets each watch sit comfortably whichever wrist it is worn on. Water resistance is 150m, and lug-to-lug spans come in at 42.5mm on the 34mm and 46mm on the 37mm.
The palette borrows directly from the Icelandic landscape: volcanic black, moss green and glacial blue. The dial keeps the lumed construction that defines the series, combining Super-LumiNova BGW9 with C3, while a forged-carbon railway track frames a fully luminous white central section.
The dial and the movement
Two polished steel blades border the lumed center, and applied indices 0.5mm thick appear as numerals at the cardinal points, with extra lumed dots on the minutes track. Some markers overlap the two dial sections exactly as on earlier Hermétique references. Syringe hands carry BGW9, and the lollipop seconds hand gets a touch of lume.
Inside, the Miyota 9039 automatic powers the edition. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, holds 42 hours of reserve and includes a stop-seconds function for precise setting. Both sizes come on a vulcanised FKM rubber sport strap.
The new 34mm case narrows to an 18mm lug width so the proportions stay clean at the smaller scale, while the 37mm keeps its 20mm lugs. That is the only dimensional difference Baltic calls out between the two references, beyond the lug-to-lug spans already noted.
Baltic positions the Hermétique as its sporty, rugged model, and this edition gives the race a piece built specifically for the event. Riders at The Rift face conditions where terrain and weather become part of the challenge, which the 150m rating and rubber strap are plainly meant to answer.
The Rift edition is limited to 400 pieces in total across both sizes. Pricing runs €620 excluding taxes, or €744 including VAT, with no premium charged for one reference over the other.
The compact 34mm case
The 34mm version is the meaningful addition here. The Hermétique has only shipped in 37mm until now, so this is the first time the range offers a smaller option. The 18mm lug width is a deliberate move to shrink everything together rather than trimming the case alone.
Baltic has kept the integrated crown and the 150m rating identical across sizes, so the smaller watch loses none of the rugged positioning.
We have followed Baltic as it built a following on accessible, design-led mechanical watches, and the Hermétique has been the line where the brand pushed rugged instead of dressy. This Icelandic edition extends that direction with a smaller case and a race it can call its own.
The connection to The Rift is new for the maison, and it is the kind of event placement that gives the brand a real-world test rather than a marketing exercise. Timing a race of nearly 900 riders across volcanic trails is a credibly demanding brief for a tool watch.
What Baltic has not said is how the 400 pieces split between the two sizes, nor whether any are reserved for race riders. The pricing is flat across both, so the choice comes down to wrist size rather than budget, which is a fairer way to launch a compact option.
For readers weighing the smaller size against the original, the numbers are clear: 34mm against 37mm, 42.5mm against 46mm lug-to-lug, and 18mm against 20mm lugs. Everything else, from the Miyota movement to the FKM strap, is shared across the two.
The 400-piece run and €620 pre-tax price put this in line with the rest of the Hermétique family rather than above it, which suggests Baltic wants the Rift edition read as a production addition, not a collector's vault piece. Both sizes are available now through Baltic's website.
