Sunspel is an English maker founded in 1860 in Nottingham, and it is best known for fine cotton T-shirts, boxer shorts, and the Riviera polo that Daniel Craig wore as James Bond. Behind the brand

Sunspel was founded in Nottingham, England, in 1860 by Thomas Arthur Hill. Nottingham was a center of the English hosiery and lace trade, and the company grew up inside that technical culture. By the early 1900s Sunspel had built its name on fine, long-staple cotton underwear and on some of the earliest luxury T-shirts.

The company moved its factory to Long Eaton, Derbyshire, in 1937, and it still makes its core garments there. The factory is central to the brand’s English identity. The Hill family owned the business through the 20th century. It was sold in 2005 to private investors who modernized the brand without leaving Long Eaton behind.

The Riviera polo

The Riviera polo began as a 1950s mesh cotton design in the Sunspel archive. It was pulled from that archive and altered for Daniel Craig to wear in Casino Royale in 2006. It was not designed for the film. The polo on screen was a 1950s shape adjusted to fit the actor, and that archive origin became part of its quiet appeal.

The Riviera is made from mesh cotton, an open knit that gives the polo a lighter feel than a dense pique. The Bond connection made the style a widely cited menswear reference.
