Jacquemus
The independent French label that turned the light of Provence and a miniature handbag into a global name.
Jacquemus is a French fashion label founded in 2009 by Simon Porte Jacquemus, shaped by the light and color of Provence and known for playful proportions and miniature bags. The house works between ready-to-wear and accessories, with pared-back silhouettes, sun-bleached neutrals, and a warmth borrowed from the south of France.
The label built its name on feeling rather than a traditional advertising machine. Runway shows became open-air events, social media carried the images, and a micro bag called Le Chiquito caught the eye of the industry. That combination of warmth and spectacle gives Jacquemus a cultural reach far larger than its independent scale would suggest.
Behind the brand
Simon Porte Jacquemus launched the label in 2009 at twenty, not long after his mother died. He was born in Salon-de-Provence and grew up in Mallemort, in the south of France, and he named the house with her maiden name. Provence became the fixed reference for the label from the first collection.
Jacquemus is based in Paris and showed at Paris Fashion Week for the first time in 2012. The house has remained independent since then and is not owned by a luxury conglomerate. The name carries a private loss into a public point of view, one built on the places and memories of the founder’s childhood.
The Provencal eye
The label runs Provencal warmth through Parisian minimalism. Silhouettes stay simple, but proportions shift: longer sleeves, cropped tops, oversized tailoring, and bags sized at either extreme. Color does the emotional work, moving between sun-bleached neutrals, wheat, lavender, and the saturated blue of a Mediterranean sky.
Provence gives the house its palette and its heat, and Paris gives it the restraint. The clothing feels warm without turning rustic. That mix is recognizable before any logo appears.
The bags that made it famous
Le Chiquito is the bag most associated with the label. It is an elongated crossbody with a top handle, and its exaggeratedly small size is credited with helping start the mini-bag trend of the mid-2010s. The proportions made it a social-media object as much as a functional accessory.
Le Bambino is a different idea. It is a structured top-handle bag in smooth calf leather with a gold branded plaque, sold in size variants including Long. Le Bambimou offers a softer, less angular version of the same silhouette. The three lines stay distinct, and each one uses shape and scale the way another house might use a monogram.
The wider range
The accessory line extends well beyond the miniature bags. The Le Bob line of bucket hats carries metallic logo hardware and gives the label’s humor a functional shape. Ready-to-wear covers white shirting, tailoring, knitwear, and dresses in the same warm, pared-back register. The house has also built streetwear-luxury credibility through a Jacquemus x Nike collaboration.
The bucket hat has become one of the label’s recognizable pieces. We include the Le Bob bucket hat among the best options for women, and its take on the white shirt dress sits in our guide to the best white dresses for women.
Shows as spectacle
Jacquemus made fashion shows into events that people who never attend fashion shows still see on a phone. For its 10th-anniversary collection in 2019, the house staged a show in a lavender field in Provence. For spring/summer 2021, it built a runway through a wheat field outside Paris. The two settings were different in tone and season, but both reinforced the same Provencal story.
Social media carried both shows far beyond the industry. That reach became even more explicit in June 2023, when Beyonce performed in Jacquemus at the Velodrome in Marseille. It was a pop-culture endorsement that matched the label’s own sense of scale.
Jacquemus’s place in the market
Jacquemus sits in young French luxury, between contemporary and entry-luxury pricing. The house is independent and has grown quickly without the backing of a conglomerate. It won the LVMH Prize Special Jury Prize in 2015, a grant for emerging designers and not an ownership stake.
The label has documented cultural reach far above its size. Its Le Porto Pichoto wristlet appears in our guide to the best designer card holders for women, and our pick for the best small belt bag for women covers a roomier alternative to the micro bags. The Jacquemus x Nike link brought the same energy to streetwear, while the mini bags remain the clearest expression of the house’s hold on the market.
Who Jacquemus is for
Jacquemus is for someone who wants the clarity of French fashion with the warmth of the Mediterranean. It suits a buyer who sees fashion as an event, an image, and a small object to carry at the same time. It makes the case for independent design that can still fill a stadium and a phone screen.
