Celine

A Paris children's shoemaker from 1945 that became the reference point for minimalism, twice.

The story

Celine has become the reference point for minimalism twice, under two designers with very different ideas of what that means. Phoebe Philo’s decade made it the house that working women bought for themselves. Hedi Slimane’s reset moved it toward a sharper, more Parisian register. The French house, owned by LVMH, is unrelated to the singer who shares the name.

The one constant is the leather. Celine’s bags are the quietest well-made objects in French luxury, and we include the house in our guide to the best quiet luxury brands.

Behind the brand

History of Celine

Céline Vipiana opened a made-to-measure children’s shoe shop in Paris in 1945 with her husband Richard. The business moved into women’s shoes in the 1960s, then into leather goods and ready-to-wear in the 1970s, and it took the Triomphe motif from the wrought-iron gate of the Arc de Triomphe in 1973, and that chain link has survived every change of designer since.

LVMH acquired the house in 1996 and installed Michael Kors, who ran it until 2004 and put its ready-to-wear on the American map. The era that defined Celine’s modern identity began in 2008, when Phoebe Philo took the studio. She built a wardrobe of clean lines and generous proportions aimed squarely at women who dressed for themselves, and she produced the Luggage tote, the Classic Box, the Trapeze and the Trio along the way. Collectors still call that decade “Old Céline,” accent included.

Hedi Slimane arrived in 2018, dropped the accent from the name, restored the house’s slimmer 1960s logo, and rebuilt Celine around sharp tailoring and a Parisian youth aesthetic. He introduced the Triomphe bag and the 16 in the process. Michael Rider was appointed in 2024, having worked in Philo’s studio before running design at Polo Ralph Lauren.

The Celine Triomphe bag - Celine, Luxe Digital

The Celine bags

The Triomphe is the current signature, closed by the interlocking brass clasp lifted straight from that Arc de Triomphe gate. It comes in a Teen, a shoulder and a boxy Besace, and it is the bag Celine leads with today. Behind it are the two Philo-era icons: the Luggage tote from 2010, with its winged, zippered “face,” and the Classic Box from 2011, a structured flap bag in box calf. The 16, named for the address of Celine’s 16 Rue Vivienne headquarters, arrived under Slimane in 2019, and the softer Ava and the knotted Belt bag round out a lineup we rank in full in our guide to the best Celine bags.

Celine eyewear

Sunglasses are the busiest part of the brand after the bags, and by search demand they rival the leather goods outright. The oversized acetate frames, many carrying the Triomphe hardware at the temple, became a recognizable Celine object in their own right, and the Slimane-era styles turned them into some of the most requested designer sunglasses on the market. Celine eyewear is made through Thélios, LVMH’s in-house eyewear maker, and a pair costs well below a bag.

Craftsmanship and materials

Celine makes its leather goods in France and Italy, and the house is known for hides finished to look plain rather than treated. Smooth calf, box calf and grained leather with almost no hardware leaves nowhere to hide a poor cut.

The Classic Box is the clearest example. It is a rectangle with a strap and a clasp, and its quality is legible entirely in the edge painting, the stitch density and the way the flap closes. A poorly made version of that shape gives itself away immediately.

How to spot a real Celine bag

Start with the logo, because on Celine it doubles as a date stamp. Bags made before 2018 carry “CÉLINE” with the acute accent, and everything from the Slimane era onward reads “CELINE” without it. An accented logo on a bag sold as a current-season Triomphe is a contradiction and a red flag. The heat-stamped lettering should be crisp and evenly spaced, never shallow or smudged, and it sits above a “PARIS” line and a made-in stamp for France or Italy. Inside, look for a serial or lot number embossed on a small leather tab. The Triomphe clasp should feel solid and turn cleanly, the edge paint should be smooth and unbroken, and the stitching should run straight and tight. Because so many Celine bags trade secondhand, and the Philo pieces often sell above their original retail, buy through a reseller that authenticates before it lists.

Where to buy Celine

Celine sells through its own boutiques, its official site and a small set of luxury retailers. It does not run outlets or discount its bags. The Philo-era pieces trade actively on the secondhand market and often above their original retail price, so a specialist reseller that authenticates is the realistic route to a Luggage tote or an early Box. We rank it against its peers in our guide to the best quiet luxury brands.

Celine price

Celine prices at the upper end of the French houses, below Hermès and roughly alongside Dior. Small leather goods start in the high hundreds, and the Triomphe and the Box run from the low to mid thousands. Sunglasses are the entry point, in the low-to-mid hundreds. Because the design language changes so completely between creative directors, the archive pieces hold value unusually well. That makes a well-chosen secondhand bag the smarter buy here.
