Brioni

The Roman house that put menswear on a runway in 1952 and still trains its own tailors in the Abruzzo hills.

The story

Brioni is a Roman tailoring house founded in 1945 by Nazareno Fonticoli and Gaetano Savini, and it is best known for soft-shouldered Roman tailoring, made-to-measure suits and some of the most expensive ready-to-wear suits sold. The house turned a light, structured shoulder into a recognizable Italian silhouette. Its tailoring stays close to the body, relies on very fine cloth, and is finished by hand.

The name came from the Brijuni islands in the Adriatic, then a fashionable resort. The first shop opened on Via Barberini, and the house is still tied to Rome.

Behind the brand

Brioni was founded in Rome in 1945 by Nazareno Fonticoli, a master tailor, and Gaetano Savini, a businessman. The house staged what is widely credited as the first men’s fashion runway show, at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence in 1952. Menswear had not been presented that way before. In 1985 Brioni opened the Scuola di Alta Sartoria in Penne, in the Abruzzo region, to train its own cutters and tailors. Kering acquired the house in 2012, and Brioni is no longer independent.

Formal menswear has been the center of the business from the start. The school protects the handwork behind the suits. The house trains its own tailors instead of buying capacity from outside workshops.

The Roman cut

The Roman shoulder is the house’s central signature. Brioni jackets use a soft, lightly structured shoulder and a clean chest. The cut sits closer to the body than the English drape. A jacket built this way follows the body without pulling or padding the shoulder line.

The effect reads as calm rather than imposing. The shoulder carries the jacket without visible bulk, and the suit moves with the wearer instead of building a frame around him.

Bespoke and Su Misura

Brioni offers made-to-order work at two levels. Su Misura is the made-to-measure program, and full bespoke is above it. A bespoke suit is assembled by hand across many hours of work by a single trained tailor, cut and finished for one body from an individual pattern.

One pair of hands works the cloth from the first cut to the final press. A factory garment is not made that way, and most of the price buys that labor.

Penne and the tailoring school

Brioni makes its tailoring in Penne, in Abruzzo. The house opened its tailoring school there in 1985 and trains cutters and tailors over several years. The school feeds the workshop rather than running as a separate project, so new tailors learn the house methods before they join production.

The arrangement gives Brioni control over its construction. The Roman shoulder and the finish stay consistent because the house trains the hands that make them.

Cloth and price

Cloth is a significant part of what a Brioni suit costs. The house works in very fine wools, and in vicuna and cashmere at the top of the range. Those fibers raise the cost before any cutting begins. Beyond tailoring, Brioni makes shirting, knitwear, outerwear and formalwear.

Fine cloth changes the feel and the drape of a suit. Cashmere and vicuna are softer and rarer than ordinary wool, and that scarcity is built into the final price.

Brioni’s place in the market

Brioni is in the top tier of Italian men’s tailoring, above mainstream designer suiting. Its bespoke and made-to-measure work places it in our ranking of the best suit brands for men. The house also appears in the most expensive suits in the world for its vicuna and cashmere tailoring. Its shirting is a reference point in the best dress shirts for men.

Brioni costs more than most designer suits and competes on handwork and cloth rather than on trend. The tailoring is built to stay in a wardrobe for years, and it is priced accordingly.

Who Brioni is for

Brioni is for a man who buys tailoring as a long-term proposition. The buyer values a soft Roman shoulder, a clean chest, and cloth that feels expensive before the first fitting. He is prepared to pay for handwork that shows mainly in fit and finish.

This customer is not following a fashion cycle. He wants a suit that reads as correct at the highest level of formal dress, and he is buying for occasions where exactness counts.
