Barbie knew a good tote when she saw one.
If you caught the final scene of Barbie, you might have spotted it: Mansur Gavriel Everyday Soft Tote, slung over Margot Robbie’s shoulder in a now-discontinued shade of pink as she takes her first steps into the real world.
Looking back on it now, it makes total sense.
After a lifetime in a perfectly molded, rigid universe, Barbie steps into reality with a bag that is gloriously un-molded. No fussy structure. No heavy hardware. No chaotic maze of compartments. Not even a loud logo trying to do the talking. Just remarkably soft Italian leather—inside and out—that slumps, bends, and folds completely flat.
And honestly, I get it.
The Soft Everyday Tote from Mansur Gavriel is precisely the kind of bag you reach for when you simply don’t want to overthink things. It effortlessly pairs with everything, holds a surprising amount of daily chaos, and unlike so many stiff leather totes, it never feels like you’re carrying the weight of the bag itself—just whatever you actually need for the day. Then, when you’re done, you can fold it flat and tuck it away without a second thought.
Sometimes, a bag really is all in the name. Here is how Mansur Gavriel Soft Everyday Tote actually holds up in real life.
As its name suggests, the Mansur Gavriel Soft Everyday Tote is an everyday bag in the truest sense. Work, weekends, travel, errands, dinner plans—it slips easily into all of them, then folds completely flat when you’re done. If your laptop is the main passenger, I’d choose something more structured. But if you’re looking for an easy, no-fuss leather tote that goes everywhere and asks for very little in return, this one more than earns its name.

Mansur Gavriel Everyday Soft Tote review: The quiet strength of a bag that gives way
Where structured bags are built to hold their shape, this one is built to hold your life, whatever shape that happens to take.
That’s the whole idea behind the Everyday Soft Tote by Mansur Gavriel, and the reason I keep reaching for it. It doesn’t ask you to pack around a frame or keep up appearances. It just adapts.
Soft power, in bag form.
Unboxing: Nothing to see here (and that’s the point)
The tote arrives folded in a dust bag. This is a leather bag reduced to its simplest form: remarkably thin, incredibly flexible, and almost weightless.

Pick it up and the first thing you notice is how little there is of it.
Materials & craftsmanship: Leather, in and out
The exterior is Italian tumbled calfskin: grained, buttery and surprisingly thin. The interior is lined in Italian lambskin. That means it’s leather inside and out, with no fabric lining hiding underneath.

It’s remarkably flexible. You can fold it, squash it into a carry-on.
This is where the craftsmanship shows. A bag this pared back has nowhere to hide. No hardware to distract you, no clever pockets to admire. It’s the leather and the stitching, and both hold up to close inspection.
The handles are reinforced, and you feel the difference when the bag is loaded. They take the weight without stretching or twisting.

Aesthetic & design: Simplicity, stitched in Italy
This classic tote, though simple in design, provides a casual elegance. A wide opening, a narrower base, two long handles. That’s it.
And yet it has presence. The slouch gives it movement. It looks relaxed rather than careless.
There’s no logo shouting for attention, just Mansur Gavriel written in gold in a tiny font barely noticeable. No metal feet, no clasps, no zips on the outside. If you’ve grown tired of bags that announce their price tag before you’ve walked into the room, this one is a deep breath.

It also plays well with everything. Jeans and a white shirt, tailoring, linen on a weekend away. It doesn’t ask you to dress around it.
Colors & sizes: The flash of red you only catch when you look inside
Mine is Black/Flamma. From the outside, it’s a classic black tote. Open it, and you get a flash of red lambskin inside.

It’s the one moment of drama in an otherwise very discreet bag, and I love that contrast of character. Only you (and whoever peeks over your shoulder at the café) get to see it.
At the time of writing, the Everyday Soft Tote also comes in Anise, Algae Nubuck, Chocolate Suede and Ebony.
If 21.5 inches across sounds like more bag than your day requires, there’s also the Small Everyday Soft Tote: same idea, scaled down.

Functionality: Every day, everything, every way
Every day. This is the bag I grab when I don’t want to think about which bag to grab. Think school runs with a supermarket stop on the way home.
Everything. The capacity is huge. A 16-inch laptop goes in without a fight, and there’s still room for a water bottle, a sweater, a book and the general debris of a full day. The gym kit fits too. Because the leather is soft, the tote bag gives around what you pack instead of bulging. Even when it’s full, it never looks overstuffed.

Every way. The 9.8-inch handle drop is generous enough to throw the tote over your shoulder, even when it’s packed, or to carry it in the crook of your elbow. And when you don’t need it, this capacious tote bag folds up with ease, which is essential when you’re bringing it along on a trip or keeping it stored.

Now for the honest part.
It’s really, truly minimal inside. There’s one interior pocket and a small attached pouch for keys and cards. That’s the whole organization system. If you like everything in its place, you’ll want a pouch or two of your own.

It doesn’t protect your laptop. The tote fits a 16-inch laptop with no problem, but it doesn’t hold it. The leather is thin and there’s no padding or structure, so it won’t absorb bumps. If I’m carrying a laptop, it should go in a protective sleeve first.
It slumps. That’s the price of softness. You can’t have a bag that folds flat in a suitcase and also stands to attention under a desk.
Care & maintenance: Soft leather, light touch
Tumbled calfskin is known for lasting, but it can still scratch. Mansur Gavriel recommends conditioning the leather now and then to keep it hydrated, keeping it away from rough surfaces, and storing it in its dust bag when it’s off duty.

Nothing demanding. Just don’t treat it like a canvas shopper.
Personally, I think a soft leather tote looks better with a little life on it. A few marks from real days are part of the deal.
Price: Under $1,000
At $895, the Everyday Soft Tote isn’t an impulse purchase. And with so little “bag” to it, the price can feel steep at first glance.
But you’re paying for what’s there. Italian calfskin outside, lambskin inside, reinforced handles, and a design simple enough to stay relevant long after this season’s It-bag has been forgotten.
Use it most days for a few years and the cost per wear quickly becomes sensible.
Not a bargain. Fairly priced for a bag that carries your whole week without asking for anything back.

A bag with a cast list: Barbie, Katie Holmes and Julianne Moore
The Everyday Soft Tote has quietly built up some admirers.
Katie Holmes and Julianne Moore have both been photographed carrying it, time and again. These are women who could carry anything, and they keep coming back to this one. That tells you something.
Then there’s Barbie. In the film’s final scene, Margot Robbie carries the tote in pink. That color has since been discontinued, but the symbolism has stuck. When Barbie trades plastic for real life, she picks the simplest, softest bag in the room.
Not a bad endorsement for a bag that never asks to be noticed.
Who is the Mansur Gavriel Everyday Soft Tote best for?
For the woman who wants one beautiful bag that just goes, without having to think about it.
The Everyday Soft Tote makes sense if you:
- Carry a lot but hate looking like you do.
- Love a pared-back wardrobe and want your bag to blend in.
- Travel often and want a leather tote that folds flat in your suitcase and becomes your day bag on arrival.
- Prefer one big open, flexible space to more structured compartments.
This is an easy bag for easy days. And most days, that’s exactly what many of us want.

KAAI Pyramid: The structured work bag
If your tote is really a laptop bag, this is the one I’d choose. The Belgian brand’s Pyramid has clean, architectural lines and a structured body that protects a 15.6-inch laptop, with far more organization inside. It’s the Everyday Soft Tote’s opposite in personality, and the better choice for the office. Read our full KAAI Pyramid review.
