The Macallan has unveiled TIME : SPACE Sherry Cask, the third chapter in its TIME : SPACE Collection. The release is a 20-year-old single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 44.8% ABV. It continues the circular design language the distillery first introduced around its 200th anniversary, a shape meant to hold past, present and future in one object.
This edition roots that idea more firmly in Jerez de la Frontera, the southern Spanish city at the center of the brand's sherry cask production. The presentation takes its cues from clusters of Palomino grapes, while warm gold tones reference the Andalusian landscape that surrounds the city's bodegas.
What makes this release different
The Jerez connection runs deeper than decoration. This is the first Macallan whisky shaped by casks seasoned with Valdespino sherry since the Spanish producer joined The Macallan's ownership. Before the final blend, the whisky matured in Scotland, mostly in European oak casks that had been seasoned with sherry.
The marriage then drew on a selection from the first 200 casks seasoned at The Macallan's Valdespino bodega in Jerez, making this the first Macallan influenced by Valdespino sherry casks since the acquisition. Those casks were produced through the distillery's own cooperages and filled in 2024. Part of the whisky's story therefore starts in a Spanish bodega, not in Speyside.
The Macallan is the single malt house whose auction records define the top of the whisky market, and it has long tied its reputation to sherry-seasoned oak. Valdespino now belongs to the same owner, so the sherry that seasons the casks comes from within the family.
The wider journey is told in Mastery Beyond Reason, a new documentary narrated by photographer Steve McCurry and featuring sommelier Josep Roca. It follows a cask from forests and sawmills in America and northern Spain, through cooperages and bodegas in Jerez, to The Macallan Estate in Speyside.
Rather than centering the finished bottle, the film focuses on the network of crafts behind it. Forestry and woodworking give way to cooperage, then to sherry production and finally to whisky making. It is a study in labor and geography more than in luxury.
The vessel looks at time through form, while the documentary traces it through material and place. Together they frame TIME : SPACE Sherry Cask less as a standalone object and more as the outcome of a long chain of decisions, landscapes and specialized skills.
Where it stands among Macallan releases
The Macallan has built its TIME : SPACE Collection as a meditation on time, and the circular vessel carries that idea literally. Where earlier chapters emphasized continuity in the abstract, this one pins the idea to a specific place and the grapes that grow there.
We have long tracked The Macallan at the summit of whisky pricing. The most expensive whiskey ever sold is a bottle of The Macallan 1926, which reached £2,187,500 at Sotheby's in London in November 2023, and no bottle of spirits or wine has beaten it at auction since.
The material available does not give a price for TIME : SPACE Sherry Cask, nor the number of bottles or a retail date. For a malt drawn from a bodega's first seasoning run, those are the figures collectors will want next.
The documentary's credits are part of the story. Steve McCurry is a photographer and Josep Roca a sommelier, so the film approaches the whisky from image and from wine, not from the distillery alone. That choice matches its stated focus on the crafts rather than the bottle.
The 20-year age statement and 44.8% strength give the vessel a traditional core.
The gold tones and Palomino-inspired detailing give the circular vessel a clearer relationship to Andalusia than earlier chapters offered. Whether that regional storytelling continues in future TIME : SPACE editions has not been stated.
