Glenmorangie has released its oldest single malt to date, a 50-year-old whisky priced at $36,000 a bottle. Only 149 bottles exist. The expression, called Glenmorangie 50 Years Old, was bottled at cask strength of 45.7 percent ABV.
The half-century statement tops everything the Highland distillery has put out before, though it still trails the wider industry race. Balvenie recently set the mark at 88 years with a single malt. Fifty years, in flavor terms, is an age where the whisky can still hold together.
Glenmorangie is a distillery in Scotland's Highland region, owned by LVMH alongside its Islay sister distillery, Ardbeg. Where Ardbeg leans into heavily peated spirit, Glenmorangie makes unpeated whisky across a range of cask types under master distiller Dr. Bill Lumsden MBE.
Our guide to the best whisky brands names Glenmorangie Signet as our pick of the field, a 46 percent Highland malt built on high-roast chocolate malted barley with mocha, dark chocolate and cappuccino notes. The new 50-year-old is a different creature, far older and far quieter.
How the whisky was made
The liquid began with some of the last floor maltings produced at the distillery before that operation was decommissioned in 1977. Floor malting is the slow, hands-on method where barley is turned by hand on stone floors, and it had ended by the time this whisky was aging.
The spirit first matured in two kinds of wood: bourbon hogshead casks and first-fill Oloroso sherry butts. In 1999 Lumsden chose a parcel from that stock, drawing mostly on the bourbon barrels with a small portion of sherry-matured liquid.
He re-casked the selection into a single refill hogshead barrel. The aim was to soften the wood's influence as the whisky continued to age, so the oak would round out rather than dominate. It then spent a further 25 years in that cask before bottling.
That long second maturation shaped the flavor. The whisky shows abundant fruit on the palate: mango, papaya, pineapple, orange and grape, layered over maple, oak, pepper and leather, with only a whisper of smoke. It is, by one critic's account, a very good ultra-aged single malt.
Lumsden called the release among his proudest creations. "I often wondered if the day would ever come that we'd be able to bottle a Glenmorangie with such a mighty age statement," he said in a statement. The combination, he added, presents depth with the house's signature elegance.
Every bottle comes in a handmade display vessel created by American ceramic artist Peter Pincus. He made 149 of them, one for each bottle, forming a work the brand calls Together in Spirit, which holds the bottle within it.
This restrained recipe is a contrast with Lumsden's usual experiments. His Signet uses chocolate malted barley, and Tale of the Forest was made from barley kilned with botanicals such as juniper berries, birch bark and heather flowers. The 50-year-old keeps things relatively simple.
Lumsden is sometimes called the Willy Wonka of whisky, a nickname that has become something of a cliché. His team does have a real penchant for experimentation, and this release shows what the same team does when it holds back.
What the price and access look like
Each bottle costs $36,000. For comparison, our whisky guide points to Macallan 12 Year Double Cask and Johnnie Walker Blue Label for value and everyday drinking, and to Ballantine's Finest for the budget end of the Scotch range.
Buyers are directed to the Moët Hennessy Private Client Team, the distillery visitor center, or an inquiry through the distillery's website. No retail listing is mentioned, so access is narrow by design for a release of only 149 bottles.
Glenmorangie's reputation rests on experimentation across cask types, and this release applies that instinct over decades. Even at 50 years the whisky carries the fruit-forward, unpeated Highland character at the core of what Lumsden's team has released under the LVMH banner.
