Clemence, the English microbrand, has launched the Photic MKII Swiss Edition, the first watch in its line to carry a movement made in Switzerland. Limited to 25 pieces, it went on sale on 22 October at 1 pm Eastern through Clemence Watches. Every unit is spoken for fast.

The engine is the Soprod M100 automatic, replacing the Miyota calibers Clemence has fitted to the Photic up to now. The M100 is regulated to plus or minus four seconds a day, holds a 42-hour power reserve, and runs hours, minutes and seconds. Dimensional changes are nil.

The case remains 38.5mm across and roughly 46.5mm lug-to-lug, with an overhanging bezel that measures about 39mm. Thickness stays at 10.5mm. A soft-iron housing around the movement gives the watch anti-magnetic resistance rated at 25,000 A/m. Water resistance is 200 meters.

The color of this edition is a new one for the brand: Atoll Blue, a dial shade Clemence calls its own. Around it is a fully luminous bezel with a numbered layout rather than the usual markings. Applied luminous indices carry Arabic numerals at 12 and 6. The lume runs across hands, indices and bezel.

Age, steel, and design come together in a 316L stainless case fitted to a three-link steel bracelet with a micro-adjust clasp. The price is £949, roughly $1,275 at the time of writing. That is a premium of about £350 over the standard Photic, whose movement is the Miyota. Clemence has left it there.

Jason Heaton spent time with the standard Photic MKII earlier this year and rates it among the best accessibly priced divers, and the Swiss Edition lands as the strongest take yet on it. The writer, less drawn by Swiss provenance than by the watch itself, still calls the new color the best detail beyond the bezel.

Atoll Blue nails what is hardest about the color blue: to make a blue that actually works. Clemence's restraint with new colors is deliberate, and the writer closes by hoping Atoll Blue spreads to the Munro and to a future standard Photic, even if collectors will forgive its arrival in another Clemence model later.

What the Swiss Edition changes

The movement is the point of difference, not the note to linger on: under $1,300, the Soprod M100 is a quiet, serious upgrade over the Miyota. The bezel and the color are what make this edition worth knowing, and the bracelet, crown and bezel all live up to a standard Clemence did not have to hit at this price.

A 25-piece run is small enough that the exact spec is unlikely to return as a standard line, but Clemence's color discipline suggests Atoll Blue was road-tested before it shipped. The maison has said only that it will bring the shade into more of the line if it lands. For now, the edition is the only place to find it.

Clemence built its name on excellent color choices and deliberate rollout rather than rapid model expansion. The Photic is the brand's dive watch, and this Swiss Edition is its first Swiss-movement release, a marker of where Clemence can go without abandoning the accessible pricing that made it.

Our coverage of watches jewelry has followed microbrands closely, and the Photic is alongside names we have reviewed at accessible price points. Clemence's shift to a Swiss movement at under $1,300 does not move it into the category of names it is not competing against; it sharpens the value claim it already made.

The answer is already no.

The edition's specs hold firm against the wider spread of watch coverage: 38.5mm, 10.5mm thick, 200 meters of water resistance, and a bracelet with micro-adjust are the numbers a daily diver is judged on. Clemence kept the dimensions and added the lume and the color. That is the list, and it is what the 25 buyers paid for.

What comes next is not confirmed by Clemence beyond the sale itself. Nothing further has been announced.

At £949, the Photic MKII Swiss Edition is a statement of where Clemence can go with a Soprod under the hood and Atoll Blue on the dial, without leaving the accessible diver bracket it already owns. The 25 pieces are gone, and the question left behind is whether the color returns. Every sign says it should.
