BMW has shown a new armored prototype, the Concept 7 Protection, and the most striking thing about it is how little there is to see. The saloon carries the full security treatment yet looks nearly identical to the standard version of the brand's luxury flagship.
That discretion is the entire point. The concept is aimed at people who want a security detail that does not draw attention to itself, and every armored feature is hidden from view instead of being announced through heavier panels or darker glass.
The German marque already sells factory-made Protection variants of the gas-powered 7 Series and its battery-powered sibling, the i7. The release pitches the Concept 7 Protection as expanding that extensive offering of armored Bimmers, not as a replacement for either existing model.
What is hidden under the skin
Beneath the surface the concept carries thick bulletproof glass, various types of ballistic steel, and fiber-reinforced composite support. Nothing about the exterior surrenders any of it, and that is by design rather than by accident.
The cabin adds an intercom so the driver and passengers can speak with the outside world without opening a door or cracking a window. It is a small system, but it separates a discreetly protected car from a rolling vault.
The sixth-generation 7 Series was refreshed earlier this year, and the concept carries that same commanding stance. It is a big car, but there is no exterior sign that this particular one has been rebuilt around armor.
The prototype was built to comply with the new BayB standard. That level of certification guards against common handgun ammunition, among other everyday threats, which makes it protection for regular life rather than a solution aimed at military conflict.
BMW designed the car for security in everyday life rather than in an active war zone. Anyone who wants military-grade armor should look elsewhere, though the prototype covers the overwhelming majority of real-world risk.
The powertrain underneath
The armored concept is based on the M760e xDrive plug-in hybrid. That version of the four-door pairs a 3.0-liter inline-six with a front-mounted electric motor, and the two combine to produce 603 hp and 590 ft lbs of torque.
Armor adds mass, and the Concept 7 Protection will not handle or move the same as the unarmored car. It should not feel sluggish either, given that 603 hp and 590 ft lbs of torque are on tap.
The release describes the car as expanding the armored range, and it is the Concept label that matters here. A concept is a statement of intent from BMW, a marque known for its cars and detailed technical specifications across the range.
We keep the models and technical specifications for every BMW on our brand page, and the company's wider story is in our look at BMW Group. This concept fits within our coverage of garage, which follows what premium carmakers build.
It lands beside other concepts we have written about. Alpine's A310 Vision concept revives the V-6 era as a one-off electric coupe, and Alfa Romeo's Cuorerosso concept pairs a hybrid twin-turbo V-6 with grand tourer looks.
BMW's press release makes no mention of the vehicle going into production, so no price, timing or volume has been given. The company has not said how many concepts exist or whether orders will be taken.
Still, with the stated aim of expanding the armored offering, it would not be a surprise to see the Concept 7 Protection go on sale at some point in the future in some form.
