Van Cleef & Arpels
The Place Vendôme high-jewelry maison, at the same Paris address since 1906, known for the Alhambra clover and the patented Mystery Set.
Van Cleef & Arpels is a high-jewelry maison founded in Paris in 1906, best known for romantic nature motifs, ballerina brooches, fairies, and the Alhambra four-leaf clover. It also makes fine jewelry and watches. The house has worked from 22 Place Vendôme since it opened, and that address has never changed.
Its signature achievement is the Mystery Set, a patented invisible setting in which gemstones sit edge to edge with no visible metal. The technique is the clearest example of the maison’s technical precision.
Behind the brand
Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in 1906 by Alfred Van Cleef and the Arpels family. They opened the maison at 22 Place Vendôme, and it has held that address ever since.
Richemont, the Swiss luxury group, acquired its position in stages. It held 60 percent in 1999 and reached full ownership by 2003. The house passed from family ownership to group ownership without leaving its original address.
The Mystery Set
The Mystery Set is known in French as Serti Mystérieux. Gemstones are mounted edge to edge with no visible metal, held by a hidden gold framework, so the surface reads as an uninterrupted field of color. The eye sees the stone, not the setting.
The technique developed through two patents. Van Cleef & Arpels first patented it in 1933 for flat surfaces, then extended it with a second patent in 1938 for curved, three-dimensional forms. A single piece can take around 300 hours to complete. The patent is a legal claim as much as a technical one, and it has kept the Mystery Set tied to the maison.
The signatures
The Alhambra collection arrived in 1968 and built its identity on a four-leaf-clover quatrefoil. It has become the maison’s most recognizable line. The motif reads from a distance and stays precise up close.
The zip necklace turns a fully working zipper into a jewel. It is made in precious metal and stones, and it converts from a necklace into a bracelet. The idea traces to the late 1930s, and the first finished pieces appeared around 1951. A suggestion attributed to Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, is often credited with setting the idea in motion. She is linked to the concept as inspiration only, not as the owner of a finished piece.
In 1941 the maison introduced the ballerina clips, brooches that each present an individually posed dancer. The pose changes from one clip to the next, so each piece reads as a small portrait.
The house style
Van Cleef & Arpels is a romantic and naturalist house. Flowers, ballerinas, fairies, and nature motifs recur throughout the collections, each one rendered with technical precision. The maison works across high jewelry, fine jewelry, and watches, and it belongs among the most technically accomplished high jewelry houses in the world. The vocabulary is broad but consistent, and the house can move between a clover pendant and a Mystery Set necklace without changing register.
Van Cleef & Arpels’ place in the market
Van Cleef & Arpels sits at the top price tier of the high-jewelry category. It has kept a single address at 22 Place Vendôme since 1906, and it is one of the most recognized names among the best jewelry brands. The price reflects the technical difficulty of the Mystery Set pieces and the immediate recognition of the Alhambra line. It occupies the level where jewelry is bought for milestones rather than everyday wear, and a buyer in this tier is paying for a name, a technique, and a visible heritage.
Who Van Cleef & Arpels is for
Van Cleef & Arpels suits the buyer who wants romantic jewelry with technical rigor behind it. The flowers, clovers, ballerinas, and fairies are pretty at a glance, and the construction holds up under close inspection. It is for collectors who value recognizable design, precise stone setting, and the continuity of a single Place Vendôme address. Many buyers enter through Alhambra and stay for the Mystery Set.
