Swarovski

The Tyrolean crystal cutter that supplied couture ateliers for a century before it sold jewelry under its own swan.

Swarovski brand - Luxe Digital
The story

Swarovski is an Austrian crystal maker that became a jewelry and accessories brand, and it is best known for precision-cut crystal, the swan mark and jewelry that reads as far more expensive than it costs. The company began with a machine for cutting crystal and grew into a consumer label. Its crystal is a manufactured glass with a high refractive index, cut with the precision of a gemstone rather than molded.

The facets are what produce the flash. A necklace or a pair of earrings can cost high-street money and still catch the light like something several tiers up.

Behind the brand

Daniel Swarovski was born in 1862 in northern Bohemia, where his father ran a small glass-cutting workshop. He patented an electric crystal-cutting machine in 1892, and it cut stones faster and more precisely than any hand could. He founded the company in 1895 and moved production to Wattens in the Tyrol. The headquarters is still in Wattens, and the company remains owned by descendants of the founder. Swarovski Kristallwelten, a crystal museum and visitor attraction, opened there in 1995 for the centenary.

The company stayed in the same alpine town and stayed in the family. A buyer is dealing with one continuous operation rather than a name licensed out to manufacturers.

The cutting machine and Wattens

Wattens offered the company two things it needed. The alpine water supplied hydroelectric power for the cutting machines, and the location put distance between the company and competitors who might copy the machine. The machine itself cut stones faster and more precisely than hand-cutting allowed. That speed is what let the house produce its facets in volume.

The cut is why a Swarovski piece catches the light. The flash is controlled and repeatable because a machine sets the angles, and that consistency is what lets the brand sell the same sparkle across thousands of pieces.

Crystal as a component business

For most of its history the company sold loose stones to other makers rather than finished jewelry. Couture houses, costume designers and film wardrobe departments have used Swarovski stones for decades. A stone can travel from Wattens to a couture atelier or a film set without the swan ever appearing. That trade business still runs alongside the consumer brand.

The company built two reputations at once, one among makers and one among shoppers. Someone buying the finished jewelry is buying from a supplier whose crystals have already spent decades inside other people’s designs.

The swan and the consumer brand

The company adopted a swan as its mark in 1988, having used an edelweiss before that. The swan gave the finished-jewelry line a clear symbol for shoppers. The consumer brand sells necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings, along with watches, crystal figurines and home objects.

The swan separates a finished piece from a loose component. A pendant carrying it was made to be sold directly, rather than shipped to another workshop as raw material.

What the price actually buys

This is accessible jewelry. A Swarovski piece is priced in the range of a good high-street purchase, not in the range of fine jewelry. The stones are crystal, not diamonds. Since 2012 the company has produced its crystal without lead.

The price buys the cut, the metal setting and the finished design. The value is easier to judge against other well-made non-fine jewelry than against diamond jewelry.

Swarovski’s place in the market

Swarovski is in accessible luxury jewelry, below fine jewelry and above costume jewelry. It marks the accessible end of our ranking of the best jewelry brands.

The brand does its clearest work in necklaces and earrings. We cover those in the best necklaces for women. Collection 1 is one of its jewelry lines, and our review of Swarovski Collection 1 looks at what it does.

Who Swarovski is for

Swarovski suits the person who wants sparkle and a finished look at an accessible price. It is for a necklace, a bracelet or a pair of earrings that read as far more expensive than they are. The buyer knows the stones are crystal and values the cut rather than the material.

Anyone shopping for a diamond or an heirloom gemstone should look at fine jewelry instead. The value here is in the design and the facet work.
