Off-White
Virgil Abloh's Milan label, which bridged streetwear and luxury with quotation marks, diagonal stripes, and a zip-tie left on the shoe.
Off-White is a Milan luxury streetwear label founded in 2013 by Virgil Abloh, and it is best known for bridging streetwear and luxury through quotation marks, diagonal stripes, and the zip-tie tag. The label built its identity on industrial markings, readymade references, and the graphic codes of streetwear. It pushed those codes into sneakers, collaborations, and the upper tiers of luxury fashion.
That fusion was never meant to be quiet. Off-White kept the hoodie, the sneaker, and the logo visible instead of stripping them back. Its rise followed the moment when fashion attention moved from the runway toward the street and toward social media.
Behind the brand
Off-White was founded in 2013 in Milan by Virgil Abloh, an American designer. He said the name referred to the gray area between black and white, the color off-white. His earlier project Pyrex Vision was a separate chapter. He ran it in Milan in 2012 and closed it in 2013. Off-White grew out of that work, but the two labels are distinct.
Abloh led Off-White from its founding until his death in 2021. Ownership has shifted since then. Off-White is now held by Bluestar Alliance, the brand-management firm that bought it in 2024.
The design language
The quotation-mark graphic is Off-White’s most recognizable device. Plain words such as SHOELACES and AIR appeared in quotation marks on clothing and objects, turning everyday text into a caption or a citation. The marks asked the viewer to read a word as an object rather than as an instruction.
The diagonal industrial stripes came from safety markings and ran through garments, bags, and knitwear. The motif reached knitwear through its Diagonal Outline jumper, a piece that carried the diagonal stripe into the ready-to-wear line. The zip-tie tag was left attached to sneakers and accessories, a shipping detail made into a signal. The industrial belt became the line’s most famous accessory, and the crossed-arrows motif worked as a house logo.
Abloh called the impulse behind all this the 3% rule. A small change to a familiar object, around three percent, could shift its meaning. He set out the idea in a 2017 Harvard lecture.
The sneakers
The 2017 Nike x Off-White project The Ten was Abloh’s best-documented sneaker work. It deconstructed ten Nike silhouettes, including its Air Jordan collaboration, the Air Max 90, and the Air Force 1. The Ten put his design language on some of the most recognizable sneaker models in the world. It made deconstruction feel like a luxury finish rather than a rough experiment.
The collaborations
Off-White also worked with Levi’s, Jimmy Choo, IKEA, and Rimowa. Each partnership moved the label’s graphic language into a different object, from denim to formal shoes to home furnishings to luggage. That range showed that the quotation-mark grammar could attach itself to almost anything, not just a hoodie or a sneaker.
The collaborations also kept Off-White in front of audiences that never entered a luxury store. A piece from IKEA or a Rimowa suitcase carried the same visual code into an ordinary home or journey. They placed the label’s language on shelves, luggage racks, and everyday settings where most luxury labels rarely appeared.
Abloh’s wider mark
Abloh became artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear in 2018. He was the first African-American to hold that role. Off-White reached the top of the Lyst global fashion brand ranking around 2018 and 2019, the peak of its reach.
Together they showed that a designer from streetwear could lead a heritage luxury house, and that a label born in streetwear could lead the fashion conversation.
Off-White’s place in the market
Off-White sits in the contemporary-to-luxury tier, priced well above mass streetwear. It is credited with formalizing the streetwear-to-luxury bridge that larger houses later took mainstream. Its rise marked the moment streetwear and social-media hype won over luxury fashion. The label’s luxury standing was confirmed when LVMH took a stake in the label in 2021, and that stake was a majority one.
The majority stake closed the loop between the street, the sneaker release, and the corporate luxury group. A label that began with quotation marks and a zip tie now sat inside the same structure that ran a portfolio of heritage houses.
Who Off-White is for
Off-White is for the luxury buyer who does not want luxury to quiet down. It suits someone who reads quotation marks and references, follows sneaker releases, and wants the zip-tie still attached. It is also for someone who collects the collaborations rather than a single uniform. The same code appears across footwear, luggage, and home objects.
