Dries Van Noten

The Antwerp house that starts every collection with the cloth, and grew for thirty years without a single advertising campaign.

The story

Dries Van Noten is an Antwerp fashion house built on print, textile and color, and it is best known for bold prints, unusual color combinations and layered silhouettes. The house develops its own prints, embroideries and jacquards, and the textile is usually where a collection starts. Color and layering follow from there, with pieces cut to be worn over one another.

The label opened its first shop in Antwerp in 1986, the year it was founded. For more than thirty years it ran without advertising and without outside investment.

Behind the brand

Dries Van Noten was born in Antwerp in 1958 into a family in the clothing trade. His grandfather was a tailor and his father ran fashion boutiques. Van Noten studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and founded his label in 1986, opening his first shop in the city the same year. The flagship is Het Modepaleis, a nineteenth-century building in Antwerp.

The grandfather’s tailoring and the father’s boutiques put fabric and trade at the center of the house from the start. That grounding is part of why the label grew on textile and craft instead of campaigns.

The Antwerp Six

Dries Van Noten is one of the Antwerp Six, the group of Royal Academy graduates who drove a rented van to London in 1986 and showed their collections together at the British Designer Show. The trip put Belgian fashion on the map. Van Noten founded his own label the same year.

The group arrived in London without a large commercial structure behind it and made its case through the clothes. The house still carries that designer-led origin rather than a corporate launch.

The house develops its own prints, embroideries and jacquards, and fabric is the usual starting point of a collection. A Dries Van Noten collection begins with the cloth rather than with a silhouette or a mood board. The house works directly with mills and ateliers on those textiles, including Indian embroidery workshops.

The textile carries most of the house identity. A buyer can recognize a piece by its fabric and print before finding a label, because the garment is defined by the material made for it.

Color and layering

Color is a signature as much as print. Van Noten built collections on combinations most houses avoid, putting clashing tones together and making them work. Layering is the third part of the language. The clothes are cut to be worn over each other, and the collections are assembled as wardrobes rather than as isolated looks.

Those choices produce a wardrobe meant to mix. A coat, a shirt and a trouser from different seasons still make a coherent outfit, because the house sells a system of clothing rather than a run of single looks.

The independent years

For decades Dries Van Noten took no outside money, ran no advertising campaigns and used no celebrity fronting. The label grew on its clothes alone. That independence held until Puig acquired a majority stake in 2018. Van Noten stayed on as designer after the sale, showed his final collection in June 2024, and stepped back from design.

The independent years gave the house a position outside the usual luxury machinery. Its reputation was built by the collections rather than by a campaign.

Dries Van Noten’s place in the market

Dries Van Noten is in the designer luxury tier, priced with the major Paris houses but positioned on craft rather than logo. The house started in menswear, and menswear and womenswear have always carried equal weight. That menswear origin anchors the tailoring.

The menswear foundation is why the house appears in our ranking of the best suit brands for men. Its layered approach to outerwear also puts it in our guide to the best trench coats for men.

Who Dries Van Noten is for

Dries Van Noten is for the buyer who wants craft and color ahead of logos and name recognition. It suits people who build a wardrobe over time and who care what the fabric is. The house draws men and women equally, because both sides of the collection carry the same weight.

The clothes reward that approach by working as a system. Few labels at this price produce pieces that still go together years apart.
