Methodology

How the Index
is built

The Resale Price Index is a dataset Luxe Digital collects and updates every morning.

Every morning we read the pre-owned listings for every model we track on the resale sites we follow, and take the median asking price for each model. We compare it with the brand's retail price, its US price before tax. We check retail prices by hand and update them when a brand changes its prices.

An asking price is what the seller wants, and buyers can end up paying a different price. Every listing is pre-owned, and the feeds do not tell us its condition. A model needs at least five listings on the day to appear, and we mark it as a thin sample below ten.

  1. 01

    Pre-owned listings, read daily

One median asking price per model

Each morning we read every matching listing on the resale sites we follow and take the median asking price for each model. The range under each price covers the middle half of listings.

  2. 02

    Compared with retail

The brand's US price before tax

We compare each resale price with what the brand charges new in the US. If a brand has stopped making a model or does not publish a price, we leave the comparison blank.

  3. 03

    Rare materials tracked separately

    Exotic leathers, gold and platinum

Bags in exotic leathers and watches in gold or platinum are tracked as separate models, so a single rare listing does not pull up the median of the standard model.

Resale vs retail is the median resale price divided by the retail price, minus one. A model listed for $15,000 with a $10,000 retail price shows +50%. A brand's typical figure is the median of its models.

Frequently asked questions
Is the resale price what people actually paid?
No. It is the median asking price, so half of that day's listings ask more and half ask less. Buyers can pay a different price. The range under each price shows the middle half of listings.
Where do the prices come from?
Resale prices come from The RealReal, and we read its listings every morning. Retail prices come from the brands' US websites, and for Hermès from PurseBop's table of US prices.
Why does a model have no retail price?
Either the brand has stopped making it, or the brand does not publish a price, as with Audemars Piguet. We leave the comparison blank rather than guess.
How do you handle rare materials?
Bags in exotic leathers and watches in gold or platinum are tracked as separate models. One rare listing would otherwise move the median of the standard model.
Why did a model disappear from the table?
A model needs at least five listings on the day to appear. Below ten we mark it as a thin sample. It comes back as soon as there are enough listings.
Is the listing behind the Shop link still for sale?
Usually. We read the listings every morning, so a piece that sold during the day can stay on the page until the next morning's update.
