The story

Marathon Watch Company is a Canadian watchmaker best known for search-and-rescue dive watches and field instruments built to a US military performance standard. The watches are designed in Canada and made in Switzerland. The company has operated since 1939 and remains family-owned.

What sets it apart is a genuine government contract. Marathon’s watches have been supplied to the US Army, Navy, and Marine Corps and to the Canadian Armed Forces, built to a written military specification rather than styled to look the part.

Behind the brand

Morris Wein founded Marathon Watch Company in Montreal, Canada, in 1939. The company is still family-owned and is now in its fourth generation of the Wein family. Its headquarters are in Vaughan, Ontario, and it remains a watchmaker and maker of military-specification instruments.

Marathon’s history is Canadian. In earlier decades the company assembled its watches in Canada. The Swiss manufacture that defines the current range came later, while design and product development stayed in Canada. The Wein family has held the company through that shift from Canadian assembly to Swiss production.

A real military supplier

Marathon builds several models to MIL-PRF-46374G, a US military performance standard. It has supplied watches under government contract to the US Army, Navy, and Marine Corps and the Canadian Armed Forces. That record makes Marathon a longtime official supplier, not a label that adds military styling to a civilian watch.

A watch can carry military styling without any connection to a military procurement. A Marathon built to the standard has both a written specification and a government supply record behind it, which is why the brand can speak about issue history in plain terms.

Tritium illumination

Marathon uses self-powered tritium H3 gas tubes for illumination on its tool watches. The H3 gas is sealed inside the tube, and the tube emits continuous light for years without any charge. It does not need a light source to charge and does not dim partway through a night.

That matters on a dive or a flight. The hands and markers stay visible in total darkness for the length of a mission or a watch shift. Tritium is standard sealed illumination technology in watchmaking, not a gimmick and not a safety concern.

The range

Marathon’s flagship is the GSAR, or Government Search and Rescue, a Swiss automatic dive watch with 300 meters of water resistance and tritium tubes. The TSAR, or Tritium Search and Rescue, is the quartz sibling. The JSAR, or Jumbo Search and Rescue, is a larger 46mm quartz diver in the same search-and-rescue family.

The General Purpose Mechanical is a field watch built to MIL-PRF-46374G and descended from Vietnam-era issue watches; it belongs in any serious list of field watches. The Navigator is a pilot’s watch offered in quartz or Swiss automatic. Each model is built around the same requirement: continuous tritium readability and a specification that has to be met.

Marathon’s place in the market

All current Marathon watches are made at the company’s facility in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and carry the Swiss Made mark, while design remains in Canada. That combination puts Marathon in an accessible-to-mid tier of Swiss tool watches, and it makes the brand a natural reference point in the tactical watches market.

Marathon competes on specification and illumination rather than on case finishing or complication. The buyer receives a Swiss Made watch built to a government standard, with sealed tritium tubes. It does not set out to compete with luxury dress watches.

Who Marathon is for

Marathon is for the buyer who wants the same type of watch issued to military and search-and-rescue personnel, not a civilian version of the style. It suits someone who values charge-free tritium legibility, 300 meters of water resistance in the dive models, and the provenance of a government contract. It is a working instrument for the dark, the field, and the water.
