Harry Winston
The New York house known as the King of Diamonds, from the Hope Diamond to a red-carpet loan tradition that dates to 1944.
Harry Winston is a New York high-jewelry house and watchmaker, and it is best known as the “King of Diamonds” for handling many of the world’s most famous stones. Its long red-carpet loan tradition has also earned it the name “Jeweler to the Stars.” The house sits at the extreme high end of luxury jewelry and watches.
That position rests on a direct line between rare diamonds and the people who wear them in public. Harry Winston acquired the Hope Diamond, popularized the Winston Cluster setting, and began lending jewels for the Academy Awards in 1944.
Behind the brand
Harry Winston founded the house in New York in 1932. He was born in 1896, died in 1978, and spent his working life as an American jeweler. The business he founded still carries his name.
Since 2013, the jewelry and watch operations have been part of The Swatch Group. The diamond mining arm was a separate company by that point and stayed outside the acquisition.
The famous stones
Harry Winston’s name is tied most closely to the Hope Diamond, a 45.52-carat blue diamond. He acquired it in 1949, held the stone for nine years, and then donated it to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958. The diamond became the most-visited object in the museum and remains among the most famous diamonds in the world.
Winston bought the 726-carat Jonker Diamond in rough form during the 1930s and had it cut into twelve gems. The purchase reflected the house’s appetite for rough material that required large cutting decisions.
The Winston Cluster and the red carpet
The Winston Cluster setting is the house’s signature jewelry approach. Conceived in the 1940s, it clusters diamonds of varying shapes and sizes into organic, wreath-like formations. The stones form a loose garland instead of a single centerpiece, and Harry Winston popularized the look.
The red-carpet loan tradition began in 1944, when Winston lent jewels to an actress for the Academy Awards. That practice grew into a long tradition of dressing Hollywood for its biggest night and gave the house the “Jeweler to the Stars” name.
The Opus watches
Harry Winston entered fine watchmaking with the Opus series in 2001. The series paired the house with independent watchmakers to make limited-edition, high-complication watches. The independent makers contributed the watchmaking, while Harry Winston contributed the name and the route to a jewelry audience.
The Opus line put fine watchmaking alongside the diamond suites and gave the brand a watch collection built outside the core jewelry production.
Harry Winston’s place in the market
Harry Winston sits at the extreme high end of luxury jewelry and watches. Its standing comes from the famous stones it has handled and the red-carpet roles it has dressed.

Who Harry Winston is for
Harry Winston is for a buyer who wants jewelry built around rare stones and a public history. It is for a person who follows the red carpet for the diamonds rather than the dress. It also suits a watch collector drawn to high-complication pieces made with independent watchmakers.
