Grenson
The Northamptonshire shoemaker since 1866, known for Goodyear-welted brogues on a chunky triple-welt sole.
Grenson is a British shoemaker from Northamptonshire, founded in 1866 and best known for Goodyear-welted men’s and women’s shoes and boots. Its signature is a chunky, contemporary take on traditional English shoemaking, built on the triple-welt and commando-sole styles it introduced in 2014. A century-old welting method sits under a heavier, more grounded sole, and the result looks modern.
Behind the brand
William Green began the business in 1866, making shoes in a loft above the corn merchants in Rushden, Northamptonshire. Eight years later he opened his first dedicated factory, which the brand describes as one of the first in the world to use the Goodyear-welted method. Northamptonshire was already England’s shoemaking center, and the factory placed Grenson near the front of it.
The Grenson name arrived in 1913, from “Green and Sons.” Rushden is still the brand’s home, and the shoes are made in England. The county also produced Church’s, Crockett & Jones, and Tricker’s, so Grenson shares that heritage rather than claiming it alone.
Goodyear welting and the triple welt
Goodyear welting is the construction Grenson built its reputation on. The upper is stitched to a leather welt, and the welt is then stitched to the sole, so a cobbler can replace the sole without touching the upper. The payoff is longevity: the shoe is built to be resoled, and resoled again, the buy-fewer-better case in leather. The welt also gives the shoe its shape and helps keep water off the upper.
In 2014 Grenson introduced its triple welt and commando sole, and that became the modern signature. The extra welt layers and the deep rubber tread give the shoes a chunkier profile. It changed the look of an English dress shoe: formal brogue detailing set on a sole that can handle a wet pavement, more fashion-forward than the slim-soled classics it grew up beside. Where the other Northamptonshire makers stay slim and refined, Grenson leans into weight.
The shoes
The Archie is the signature exaggerated full brogue. It takes the traditional punching and returns it larger and bolder, so the perforation becomes the main event. The Fred is the brogue boot version, carrying the same detailing up into a higher, laced silhouette. The Nanette is a women’s lace-up hiker boot that pairs the commando sole with a taller shape built for real conditions. The triple welt threads through all three.
Where it sits
Grenson sits at the accessible end of English Goodyear-welted shoemaking, below bespoke and top-tier ready-to-wear, and its shoes are still made in England with traditional welting. That makes it a practical first step into English dress footwear: the construction history and the county provenance without the top-tier price. Among its peers, Church’s keeps a more classic, slim profile, while Grenson sets a traditional welt under a bolder sole. For a more streamlined boot, our best Chelsea boots for men guide covers the field, and the chunkier end of the range sits naturally with our best casual shoes for men.
