Denza
BYD's premium electric brand, born from a BYD–Mercedes joint venture and now the group's upmarket line, led by the D9 and Z9 GT.
Denza is the premium electric-vehicle brand owned by the Chinese automaker BYD, positioned a clear step above the mainstream BYD badge. It pairs an engineering pedigree inherited from a former German partner with BYD’s own battery and EV technology, aimed at buyers who want more polish and presence than a mass-market electric car without reaching for an ultra-luxury flagship.
Behind the brand
Denza began in 2010 as an equal joint venture between BYD and Daimler, China’s first Sino-foreign new-energy vehicle venture. Daimler, the German company later renamed Mercedes-Benz Group, brought a level of refinement few Chinese carmakers could match in those years, while BYD supplied the batteries and the electric drivetrain. The two shared control for more than a decade.
The balance shifted in 2022, when BYD raised its stake to 90 percent, and in September 2024 Mercedes-Benz exited completely, making Denza a wholly owned BYD brand. That German-era influence is part of Denza’s story, but it is history now. No current ownership or backing comes from Mercedes-Benz. What remains is a brand with a German-influenced sense of detail and a Chinese parent’s command of EV cost and scale.
The lineup
Denza keeps its range tight. The D9 is a premium full-size MPV and the brand’s original flagship, offered as a plug-in hybrid or a full EV. The N7 is a mid-size electric SUV, the N9 a full-size SUV, and the Z9 GT a full-size fastback grand tourer that has led Denza’s push into Europe. Between the D9 and the Z9 GT, the range stretches from family people-mover to continent-crossing grand tourer.
Where Denza sits
Denza is BYD’s premium line. The main BYD badge covers affordable volume, and Denza serves buyers who want a stronger sense of occasion. Prices vary by market, and the brand stays premium rather than ultra-luxury. BYD’s backing gives it advantages a smaller premium marque would struggle to match, since BYD ranks among the largest car companies in the world, and that scale feeds Denza’s batteries, supply chain, and production. Set against the names in our guide to the best luxury car brands, Denza aims at the band just below the ultra-luxury tier, and Europe is now its proving ground. The Z9 GT leads that entry with a fastback grand-tourer shape, and Denza’s task is to convince European buyers that a Chinese premium badge can hold its own next to the established German names.
