Breguet
One of the oldest watchmaking houses, founded in Paris in 1775, whose founder patented the tourbillon and set forms still standard across the industry.
Breguet is a French-born haute horlogerie house founded in Paris in 1775, best known for the tourbillon that Abraham-Louis Breguet patented in 1801 and for a watch widely credited as the first wristwatch. The name has run unbroken since the 18th century, and its modern manufacture sits in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland.
Breguet’s story runs through mechanisms rather than styling. The tourbillon, the self-winding Perpétuelle, and the Breguet overcoil balance spring all came from Abraham-Louis Breguet’s own workshop, and all three still appear in watchmaking today. They are the parts of a watch that keep time, and the forms he set are now standard across the industry.
Behind the brand
Abraham-Louis Breguet was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, and built his business in Paris. He opened a workshop on the Quai de l’Horloge, on the Île de la Cité, in 1775. The founding is French, even though the founder was Swiss.
Ownership has passed through several hands. The house remained in the family until 1870, then moved through other private owners before the Chaumet brothers bought it in 1970. Investcorp acquired it in 1987, and The Swatch Group has owned Breguet since 1999. Its modern manufacture is in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. The name did not fall out of use during any of those transfers.
The inventions that outlived the founder
Abraham-Louis Breguet patented the tourbillon in 1801 to counter gravity’s effect on the regulating organ. It remains one of the best-known watch complications and is still used across the industry.
The Perpétuelle, an early self-winding watch, arrived in 1780. The Breguet overcoil balance spring followed in 1795. Each one solved a specific mechanical problem, and each one outlived the man who made it.
The Breguet signature
The house look rests on three hallmarks. Guilloché dials are engine-turned. Cases carry a coin-edge band. Hands end in an open tip, and that shape is now known as the Breguet hand.
The Classique line carries those hallmarks as the core dress range. A plain dial can still be identified as a Breguet before the name on the watch is read. The same three details tie the current catalog back to the house language.
The collections
Breguet divides its range into five named collections. Classique holds the house dress pieces and the signature hallmarks. Tradition exposes an 18th-century-style movement architecture. Marine references Breguet’s role as chronometer-maker to the French Navy. Type XX, Type XXI, and Type XXII are pilot’s chronographs with an aviation lineage. Reine de Naples is named for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples.
The aviation link belongs to Breguet the watchmaker, not to the aircraft company founded later by a descendant. The two were separate companies.
The 1810 watch commissioned by Caroline Murat is widely credited as the first wristwatch, though the claim is still disputed. The Marie-Antoinette pocket watch (No. 160) was commissioned in 1783 and completed in 1827, four years after Abraham-Louis Breguet’s death. It was never delivered to the queen.
Breguet’s place in the market
Breguet sits in the top tier of luxury watch brands. It has an unbroken name back to 1775, a founder whose patents still shape the industry, and a modern manufacture in Switzerland under The Swatch Group. The watches sell at haute horlogerie levels, and the house’s history supports that placement.
The same technical pedigree puts Breguet in the class of watches collectors track at the upper end. For a view of that tier, the guide to the most expensive watches ever made covers the auction and retail peaks. The tourbillon and the house signature appear across the catalog, from Classique to Tradition.
Who Breguet is for
Breguet suits a buyer who reads watches as a record of mechanical invention. The Classique and Tradition lines anchor the range in the house’s dress traditions, while Marine, Type XX, and Reine de Naples add a wider register. Someone who wants a tourbillon traceable to a patent filed in 1801, or a dial turned rather than printed, will find the details on the watch and in the archive. It is a house for those who care about the history under the dial as much as the name on it.
