You know the beautiful tote that now carries your laptop like a hammock, digging into your shoulder by lunch? It wasn't a bad bag. It just had the wrong job.
Bags fail in small, specific ways. A tote that counts as a personal item on a plane has to fit under the seat in front of you, usually 16 to 18 inches wide. Most people need no more than 20 to 24 liters in an everyday backpack. And a surprising number of work bags have no zip at all. You find out on a packed train.
So the rule never changes: the day a bag has to survive comes first, the look second. What it carries first, where it goes second, style third. A bag that does its job gets carried. A bag that doesn't ends up on a hook.
The bags below come from our buying guides, from the best designer work bags to the best evening clutches.
What should you check before you buy a bag?
What goes in the bag on a normal day sets its size. Laptop, charger, water bottle, a sweater? Or phone, keys and a card? The size then decides almost everything else.
Four things the photos rarely show matter just as much. The closure: a top zip keeps your things in and other hands out on a crowded commute. The handles: they're where many totes give up, digging into your arm or coming unstitched within a season. The shape: a structured bag keeps your things organized and sits neatly on a desk, while a slouchy one folds flat against a wall. And the color: black, tan and brown go with more of your wardrobe for longer than this year's shade.
The best bag for work
A work bag that carries a laptop needs a dedicated compartment, sturdy enough to take the weight and protect the machine. A bag made for a small laptop will not quietly stretch to a big one.
A top zip matters here too. It keeps everything inside when the bag tips over under your desk. A structured bag with inside pockets beats one open compartment where everything swims around.
The work bags we've tested include the KAAI Pyramid, Horizon and Voyager and Cuyana's Easy Tote and System Tote. The Pyramid's drawback, in our review, is weight: it is on the heavier side. For backpack people, we tested the Troubadour Apex too. Our guide to the best designer work bags has the full shortlist.
KAAI Pyramid
Scratch-proof, waterproof Italian leather in a structured tote that holds a 15.6-inch laptop. It tops our guide to work bags.
Troubadour Apex Backpack 4.0
Recycled FortiWeave with vegan-leather trim and YKK zips. We carried it through commutes and flights for our review.
Cuyana Classic Easy Zipper Tote
Soft pebbled leather that weighs only 0.7 kg and still holds a 16-inch laptop, light enough to carry from the office to the plane.
Bellroy Classic Plus
A pocket for every daily essential, in a backpack that goes from the office to the weekend.
The best travel bag
A weekend away calls for a cabin-sized bag if you're flying and a soft one if you're driving. A soft bag squeezes into the gaps of a packed trunk, and a hard case won't. If you'll be walking between trains, a bag you can carry more than one way, like a totepack or a duffle with backpack straps, saves your shoulders.
For the flight itself, a zip-top tote stops things spilling when it tips over and keeps you safer in a crowd. A luggage sleeve lets it ride on your suitcase handle. To count as your personal item, the tote has to fit fully under the seat in front, typically about 16 to 18 inches wide, 12 to 14 high and 6 to 8 deep. Airlines vary on the exact limits.
A week away with only a carry-on comes down to hardside or softside. A hard case protects anything fragile, and a soft bag flexes for the shopping you didn't plan. Men after a weekend bag will find more in our guide to the best weekender bags for men.
KAAI Horizon
Takes a 16-inch laptop, zips shut and slides over a suitcase handle, so it works as hard on a business trip as at the desk.
Troubadour Elemental
It weighs 0.8 kg and still takes a 17-inch laptop and 25 liters of everything else, in a welded ripstop shell.
Cuyana Weekender Bag
Three compartments keep your trainers away from your tees, and the straps switch from crossbody to shoulder.
Bellroy Classic Weekender
45 liters of water-resistant recycled polyester that squeezes into any corner of a packed car.
The best everyday bag
The best everyday bag is the smallest one that fits your daily kit. For a backpack, 20 to 24 liters is plenty for most people, and anything bigger just invites you to carry more. Wide, padded shoulder straps make the difference by the end of a long day.
If you carry less, a crossbody keeps your hands free and your phone within reach. If you carry more, a tote with handles that won't dig in is worth paying for. Structured or slouchy is personal taste: we like a bag that holds its shape, though a soft one stores more easily.
A neutral color matters most here, because an everyday bag goes with everything you own.
KAAI Ikon Shoulder
Clean, square lines in Italian calf leather, with a phone pocket and an adjustable crossbody strap.
Troubadour Elemental Tote
Waterproof ripstop that shrugs off rain, salt and sand, with 30 liters inside and a separate pocket for a wet swimsuit.
Cuyana System Tote
A simple Italian leather tote you build out with Cuyana's inserts, sized for a 13- or 16-inch laptop.
Bellroy Tokyo Tote
Smart pockets, a top zip and padded straps around a 13-inch laptop, in leather and water-resistant recycled fabric.
The best evening bag
An evening bag only has to carry your phone, keys and lipstick, so it can afford to be beautiful. That's the whole point of a clutch.
Most of the clutches in our guide come with a detachable strap. One bag then works as a wristlet, a shoulder bag or a crossbody. That helps when you need both hands for a glass and a canapé. On other days, a small clutch slips into your tote as an organizer, so it earns its keep.
Our full edit of the best clutches runs from everyday leather to wedding sparkle.
Cuyana Classic
Pebbled Italian leather sized for phone, keys and lipstick. On other days it slips into a tote.
Behno Elizabeth
A handcrafted black saffiano baguette with a chain strap, so it goes crossbody when you need your hands.
Mansur Gavriel Mini Cloud
Buttery leather in a curved shape, elegant with a hint of the avant-garde.
Gucci Marmont
Matelassé leather, the gold GG and a chain strap. It lifts every outfit it meets.
Bag questions, answered
What bag should I buy first?
The best first bag does the job you do most often, in a neutral color, with a closure you trust. A first bag gets carried every day, so a black, tan or brown work tote or crossbody earns its price fastest. If you've set your heart on a house, our guide to the best designer bags of all time covers the icons.
What is the most versatile bag?
The most versatile bag is the one that fits your daily kit and carries more than one way. A tote that converts to a backpack, or a crossbody with a detachable strap, works for more of your week. In a neutral color, it goes with everything.
Is it better to carry a backpack or a tote bag?
It depends on where you're going. A backpack is the practical choice for a hike or an adventure trip. A tote is the more stylish one for a city break or a relaxed coastal getaway. A totepack gives you both.
What size tote can you carry on a plane?
To count as a personal item, a tote has to fit fully under the seat in front of you. That is typically about 16 to 18 inches wide, 12 to 14 inches high and 6 to 8 inches deep. The exact limits vary by airline.
