## LIV Gravel Stealth Auto watch review: Swiss craftsmanship with a Miami accent
LIV is young by watchmaking standards. Esti and Chaz Chazanow founded the brand in 2014, which makes it a toddler next to watchmakers that count their history in centuries.
There's nothing immature about the build, though. Every LIV watch is handcrafted in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the Swiss town that is essentially the watchmaking capital of the world. It's home to the workshops or headquarters of some of the [most prestigious names in watchmaking](https://luxe.digital/watches-jewelry/luxury-watch-brands/), from TAG Heuer and Girard-Perregaux to Patek Philippe.

The first thing I read, before I'd even opened anything, was a warning printed in bold type on the branded cardboard: "*Opening this box might cause you to start adventuring.*"

Inside sits a smooth, matte black presentation box. And inside that? A bright orange bike bag. Apparently, even the packaging has places to be.
The bag protects the watch in transit, then keeps working long after the unboxing.
* **Bike mount.** The included straps attach it directly to your bike frame.
* **Crossbody or tote.** A leave-on strap turns the pouch into an everyday crossbody bag.
* **Travel pouch.** Remove the straps and it becomes a pouch for your valuables on the road.

It's a refreshing move: packaging engineered to earn its keep long after the unboxing high wears off.
### Materials & craftsmanship: Tough matter
LIV makes its case from what it calls Rugged Dense Carbon®, a proprietary mix of carbon fiber and polyamide.
Carbon fiber brings one of the **best strength-to-weight ratios you can ask for on the wrist**. It's also a material you usually find on watches costing several times more.
In other words: serious material, seriously light (more on that later).

Up front, a sapphire crystal keeps the dial protected, with a scratch-resistant coating on the outside and anti-reflective treatment on the inside. The crown screws down to seal the case, and the watch is rated to **100 meters (330 feet)**, pretty much the sweet spot for a **go-anywhere, do-anything watch**.
Swimming? Sure. Snorkeling? Absolutely. River crossing? Go for it. Caught in a torrential downpour halfway up a climb? The Gravel won't lose a second over it.

### Comfort, fit & sizing: The watch you forget you're wearing
On paper, the LIV Gravel is a big watch: **43mm across, 50.1mm lug to lug, and 12.9mm thick.** On the wrist, though, it tells a very different story.
The LIV Gravel feels far less imposing than its dimensions suggest. We expect rugged watches to feel substantial. Chunky, even. This one doesn't. The Gravel gives you the presence of a big tool watch without the heft that usually comes with it.

That's partly down to the carbon case, and partly because the whole thing weighs just **62 grams**.
On long walks or fast rides, you quickly forget it's there, which is a real advantage over heavier sport watches that swing and pull on your wrist with every movement.

### Movement: A real Swiss heart, with shock absorbers
Here's the real kicker: the LIV Gravel isn't some battery-powered quartz beater playing dress-up as a tough-guy field watch.
Inside is a **genuine Swiss automatic**: the new **La Joux-Perret G100**, a 24-jewel movement beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz).
Better yet, it packs a **68-hour power reserve**. Take the watch off on Friday evening, leave it on the dresser all weekend, and it's still running on Monday morning. That weekend-proof flexibility is a massive upgrade over the 40-hour power reserves common at this price.
Flip the watch and the skeleton caseback shows the movement at work: a solid tungsten rotor spinning over Côtes de Genève striping.

Now, the problem. Mechanical movements are notoriously sensitive to impacts. A hard knock can throw off accuracy or damage the delicate gears inside, which is exactly why most people leave their Swiss automatic at home when they head for the great outdoors.
