Everything I tested came in black (my choice, more on that below). The shell has a matte finish and a slightly stiffer weave than the smooth nylon of the Apex, which immediately gives the Elemental a more resilient feel.

More importantly, the whole setup feels designed to be pulled apart, dried out, and put back together, not carefully protected from the realities of travel. With the laptop taken care of, the rest of the compartments handle everything around it.

The detachable chest strap and hip belt proved their worth in Scotland. They're the kind of features you don't think you need until you've carried a loaded pack for a few hours, at which point you're very glad they're there. Both detach cleanly, so the Elemental doesn't suddenly look like a hiking pack when you're back in the city.

Then there are the side compression latches. Cinch them down and the profile pulls in closer to your body: less swing, more stability. A small mechanical detail that makes a surprisingly big difference.
