Round faces can wear pixies, bobs, bangs and long layers. What decides whether a cut flatters yours is where it stops, where the height sits and which way the part falls.

Length that ends below the chin, lift at the crown and a part swept to one side all pull the eye up and down instead of across. The cuts that work against a round face are the ones that stop at the cheeks or puff out at the sides, and even those have a fix.

So here are 30 cuts on real salon clients with round faces, from long pixies and bobs to curtain bangs, shags, curls and long layers. Each one says why it works and ends on what to say in the chair. Find your length and read the last line out.

## What is a round face?

A round face is about as wide as it is long, with the cheeks as the widest part, a soft jawline and a rounded chin. To check, measure your face from the hairline to the chin and across the cheekbones: if the two are close, your face is round. L'Oreal Paris suggests tracing your outline on a mirror with a dry-erase marker. Round faces often have a rounded hairline too.

## Which haircut suits a round face?

Plenty of cuts do, once four things are right. Length: let it end below the chin, since a blunt cut at the chin stops the eye at the widest point. Height: "Adding height at the crown elongates the face, creating the illusion of an oval shape," says celebrity hairstylist Harry Josh. The part: a side part or a deep side part breaks up the symmetry. Layers: start them at or below the cheekbone, so they contour the face rather than widen it.

Hair type comes next. Thick hair wants weight taken out. Fine hair wants a blunt hem. Curly hair wants a dry cut, with the volume at the crown. For women over 50, Marcos Diaz's list of face-framing cuts includes curtain bangs with long layers, a chin-length bob, a shoulder-length shag, a side-parted lob, a soft layered fringe, blended layers and waves, and a textured pixie.

## What to ask your stylist for

Bring a photo, and say you want the cut to make your face look longer. Then give the stylist three things: where you want the length to stop (below the chin is the safe line), where you want the volume (the crown, not the sides) and where you part your hair. If you want face-framing layers, ask for them to start at or below the cheekbone. Mention any cowlick, because it decides whether a fringe sits straight. If your hair is curly, ask for a dry cut.

Then read the ask line from the look you picked. It's written in the words a stylist uses.

## How often will you need a trim?

Bangs need a trim every two to four weeks, pixies and short cuts every four to six weeks, bobs every six to 12 weeks and layers every six to eight weeks, according to Healthline. Long hair can go three to six months, and curly hair 12 weeks or more. Stylist David Reid says chin-length cuts need a trim every four to six weeks, because they "look their best at the chin."

## Do round faces look better with long or short hair?

Both work. "Round faces lend themselves to both long and short hair," says celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons, and Jennifer Korab says the same. Long hair needs its length past the chin and any face-framing layers starting at or below the cheekbone. Short hair needs height on top, like the layered pixie above.

## Are bangs good for a round face?

Yes, if they're soft or long. Curtain, wispy and side-swept bangs all work on a round face. Short, heavy bangs are where stylists warn you off: Michele Antiga says short, blunt bangs make the face "seem shorter and wider." A long blunt fringe is the exception: Rebekah Forecast backs a sharp-line bang for round faces, and the long version above blends into the sides.

| Bangs | What they do | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Curtain bangs | Frame the face from a center part | A minute of blow-drying each morning |
| Wispy bangs | Show the forehead through a light fringe | Trims every two to four weeks |
| Side-swept bangs | Break up the width with a diagonal | Need a side part |
| Long blunt bangs | A sharp line past the brows, curved at the sides | Cut short and heavy, they make the face look wider |

## Is a wolf cut good for a round face?

Stylists disagree. Celebrity stylist Cheryl Bergamy recommends the wolf cut for round, oval and heart-shaped faces. Stylist Jordanna Cobella says square and heart-shaped faces suit it best, and that it works on medium to thick, wavy or curly hair. If you want one, keep it long, as in the wolf cut above.

## What haircut slims a round face?

A haircut doesn't change your face, but it can change where the eye goes. Sarah Potempa says a lob with subtle layering and face-framing pieces "can slim the cheeks." Darrius Peace says a classic bob "can offer the illusion of a slimmer face as the hair cascades down." David Lopez says a retro shag gives "definition and angles that will elongate the face and have a slimming effect." What they share is length past the chin and pieces that fall along the face.

## Which haircuts should you skip with a round face?

Skip the blunt cut that ends at the chin and volume at the sides, says L'Oreal Paris, and a sharp center part unless soft layers fall around it. PureWow adds short, straight-across bangs, because they highlight roundness; a long fringe blended at the sides, like the one above, is the exception. Tucking all of your hair behind your ears shows the full outline, says stylist Eddie Doyle; leaving a few slices of hair out softens it.

Whichever cut you pick, save the photo and copy its ask line into your phone before the appointment. The rules you were told about round faces were mostly about where a cut stops, and now you can tell your stylist exactly where.
