## 21. Red Maiden in the Green Robe: $749,900

![most valuable stamps red maiden in the green robe - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-red-maiden-in-the-green-robe-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

It’s never a good sign when a currency collapses and a substitute has to be created. But when it happens, you can be certain a few collectible treasures will emerge from the wreckage. This stamp was issued during the Qing Dynasty’s currency reform.

Only nine examples of the 2 Cents Red Maiden in the Green Robe are believed to survive. The last to surface at a Hong Kong auction changed hands for $444,477 — around $749,900 in current value.

| Country: | China |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1897 |
| Face Price: | 2 Cents |
| Current Price: | $749,900 |

## 20. Hawaiian Missionary: $786,300

![most valuable stamps hawaiian missionary - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-hawaiian-missionary-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

It’s easy to overlook history, but not here. These stamps date to a time when the United States’ presence on the Hawaiian islands was mainly missionaries doing religious and educational work.

That gives them a rare status: collector’s items from an era before Hawaiian statehood. The last 2 Cents Hawaiian Missionary to reach auction sold for $619,500 — around $786,300 in current value.

| Country: | USA / Hawaii |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1851 to 1852 |
| Face Price: | 2 Cents |
| Current Price: | $786,300 |

## 19. Penny Red Plate 77: $887,300

![most valuable stamps penny red plate 77- Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-penny-red-plate-77-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

The worst examples sometimes make the finest collector’s items. That’s the case with the Penny Red Plate 77, judged too low in quality for use before a single one was sold. The batch was poorly perforated in production and meant for destruction.

A few slipped past the incinerator. One Plate 77 Penny Red has since changed hands for £495,000 — roughly $887,300 in current value.

| Country: | United Kingdom |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1863 |
| Face Price: | 1 Penny |
| Current Price: | $887,300 |

## 18. Inverted Pair Dr Sun Yat-sen: $898,200

![most valuable stamps inverted pair dr sun yat sen - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-inverted-pair-dr-sun-yat-sen-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

Some design flaws hide in the details. This one sits front and center: Dr Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China, printed upside down.

Just one sheet of fifty was ever produced with the error, and this inverted pair is one of only two known to survive. It last sold in a Hong Kong auction for $707,700 — around $898,200 in current value.

| Country: | Hong Kong |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1941 |
| Face Price: | $2 |
| Current Price: | $898,200 |

## 17. 6d Pale Dull Purple I.R. Official: $906,100

![most valuable stamps 6d pale dull purple ir official - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-6d-pale-dull-purple-ir-official-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

Slippery hands are the only reason this stamp still exists. It was issued on the very day an official order arrived to destroy the set, yet a handful escaped the flames and found their way to collectors.

Reserved for the Inland Revenue department, these were never meant for public hands — owning or selling one would have been a criminal offense. One has since sold for £400,000, around $906,100 in current value.

| Country: | Great Britain |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1904 |
| Face Price: | 6 Pence |
| Current Price: | $906,100 |

## 16. 10 Cent On 9 Candareen: $972,200

![most valuable stamps 10 cent on 9 candareen - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-10-cent-on-9-candareen-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

From China’s Empress Dowager era comes one of the country’s most valuable stamps. Issued at 9 Candareen, it carried a 10-cent surcharge — printed, fittingly for this list, upside down. Only four examples are recorded: two used, two unused.

The finest has been valued at $766,000, around $972,200 in current value.

| Country: | China |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1897 |
| Face Price: | 10 Cent surcharge on 9 Candareen |

## 15. Tiflis: $1,089,500

![most valuable stamps tiflis - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-tiflis-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

Long before philately had its modern darlings, a small embossed stamp circulated in the Caucasus city of Tiflis — and earned its place as the first stamp of the Russian Empire.

Just six genuine examples are recorded, two of them locked away in museum collections. When one surfaced at auction it commanded €480,000, around $1,089,500 in current value — a fortune for a sliver of paper most of the world has never heard of.

| Country: | Russian Empire |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1857 |
| Face Price: | 6 Kopecks |
| Current Price: | $1,089,500 |

## 14. Red Revenue One Dollar Small: $1,217,800

![most valuable stamps red revenue one dollar small - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-red-revenue-one-dollar-small-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

This bright red stamp belongs to a tiny group of just 32 recorded copies. Almost as soon as it was issued, it was replaced by a second version — the original text was simply too small to read.

That false start turned the Red Revenue One Dollar Small into one of China’s most expensive stamps. A Qing Dynasty rarity, it has sold for $889,800, around $1,217,800 in current value.

| Country: | China |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1897 |
| Face Price: | 1 Dollar |
| Current Price: | $1,217,800 |

## 13. George Washington B-Grill: $1,532,000

![most valuable stamps george washington b grill - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-george-washington-b-grill-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

Don’t confuse this B-Grill with the other George Washington stamps of its era. The rest are plentiful and modestly priced; the B-Grill belongs to an exclusive club of just four known examples.

It’s identified by its upward-pointing indentations, larger than the grills that followed. The pattern was quickly replaced with smaller versions, sealing the B-Grill’s status as one of the rarest stamps in the world. It last sold for $1.035 million, around $1,532,000 in current value.

| Country: | United States |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1868 |
| Face Price: | 3 Cents |
| Current Price: | $1,532,000 |

## 12. Inverted Declaration of Independence: $1,776,600

![most valuable stamps inverted declaration of independence - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-inverted-declaration-of-independence-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

If you’ve ever watched a Fourth of July celebration, you know how fiercely Americans hold their independence. That spirit ran high when this stamp was created, depicting the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence.

But it earns its place here for the accident: the central picture was printed upside down. Only four are known to exist. It last sold for $1.2 million — to the surprise of many philatelists — around $1,776,600 in current value.

| Country: | United States |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1869 |
| Face Price: | 24 Cents |
| Current Price: | $1,776,600 |

## 11. Inverted Jenny: $2,206,200

![most valuable stamps inverted jenny - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-inverted-jenny-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

This stamp carries both an upside-down printing error and a slice of aviation history. The image is a Curtiss JN-4HM, a workhorse of World War I and — more importantly for collectors — the first airplane used to deliver mail.

Only a single sheet of 100 was printed, and most survive as individual examples, though two blocks of four are also known. The finest single Inverted Jenny set a record at auction, selling for $2,006,000 — around $2,206,200 in current value, and the first time a single United States stamp crossed the $2 million mark.

| Country: | United States |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1918 |
| Face Price: | 24 Cents |
| Current Price: | $2,206,200 |

## 10. Baden 9 Kreuzer Error: $2,220,700

![most valuable stamps baden 9 kreuzer error - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-baden-9-kreuzer-error-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

So much for German precision. This stamp owes its fame to a slip at the press: the Baden 9 Kreuzer should have been printed in pink, but green ink — meant for the 6 Kreuzer — found its way in, creating one of the most coveted error stamps in the world.

Only one unused copy and four used copies are known. The last to sell fetched $1,500,000, around $2,220,700 in current value.

| Country: | Germany |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1851 |
| Face Price: | 9 Kreuzer |
| Current Price: | $2,220,700 |

## 9. Alexandria Blue Boy: $2,244,100

![most valuable stamps alexandria blue boy - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-alexandria-blue-boy-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

Most American stamps were issued by the federal government, but this one predates that system. It came from Alexandria’s locally produced Postmaster’s Provisionals.

Seven copies are recorded, but only one survives on the faintly blue paper that gives the Alexandria Blue Boy its name. It remains affixed to a forbidden love letter. It sold for $1.18 million, around $2,244,100 in current value.

| Country: | United States |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1847 |
| Face Price: | 5 Cents |
| Current Price: | $2,244,100 |

## 8. The Whole Country Is Red: $2,538,000

![most valuable stamps the whole country is red - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-the-whole-country-is-red-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

Once again, a mistake turned an ordinary stamp into an extraordinary one. Made to commemorate the Chinese Cultural Revolution, it shows a worker, a farmer, and a soldier each holding the Selected Works of Chairman Mao.

The map behind them was the problem. Deemed inaccurate — the Spratly and Paracel Islands were missing and several borders were drawn wrong — the stamp was pulled almost immediately. One has since sold for a reported 13.8 million yuan, around $2,538,000 in current value.

| Country: | China |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1968 |
| Face Price: | 8 Fen |
| Current Price: | $2,538,000 |

## 7. Two Penny Blue: $2,559,700

![most valuable stamps two penny blue luxe digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-two-penny-blue-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

If you want one of the earliest stamps ever collected, look no further. The Two Penny Blue is the world’s second official postage stamp, trailing only the legendary Penny Black. Meant for heavier items, it saw far less use than its famous sibling.

It sold for 1,610,000 Swiss francs, around $2,559,700 in current value — and held the title of most expensive British Commonwealth stamp for more than two decades.

| Country: | United Kingdom |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1840 |
| Face Price: | 2 Pence |
| Current Price: | $2,559,700 |

## 6. Sicilian Error of Color: $2,833,700

![most valuable stamps sicilian error of color - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-sicilian-error-of-color-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

The Sicilian Error of Color was supposed to be orange. It came out blue. Only two are known to exist, which is exactly what makes it one of the most sought-after error stamps among collectors.

Both were shown at the Manchester Philatelic Exposition before they were separated, one later passing through the famous Ferrari collection. One has sold for €1.8 million, around $2,833,700 in current value.

| Country: | Sicily |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1859 |
| Face Price: | 1/2 Grana |
| Current Price: | $2,833,700 |

## 5. Benjamin Franklin Z Grill: $4,664,300

![most valuable stamps benjamin franklin z grill - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-benjamin-franklin-z-grill-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

This one-cent stamp carries a Z Grill — a pattern of horizontal, z-shaped indentations pressed into the paper. It belongs to one of the most exclusive clubs in philately, with just two examples in existence. One is held permanently at the New York Public Library’s Miller Collection; the other trades among the world’s most ambitious collectors.

It is widely regarded as the most elusive and most valuable of all United States postage stamps. The privately held example sold for $4,366,000 — around $4,664,300 in current value — making it the most valuable U.S. stamp ever to sell at public auction.

| Country: | United States |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1868 |
| Face Price: | 1 Cent |
| Current Price: | $4,664,300 |

## 4. Swedish Treskilling Yellow: $4,672,000

![most valuable stamps swedish treskilling yellow - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-swedish-treskilling-yellow-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

Another top spot goes to a misprint. The Swedish Treskilling Yellow was part of Sweden’s first postage stamps and should have been printed green. The yellow examples are down to a single survivor — a pristine specimen and, by many accounts, the rarest stamp in the world.

Its exact worth is famously hard to pin down. It has changed hands more than once for undisclosed sums; its last public price was $2.3 million, around $4,672,000 in current value.

| Country: | Sweden |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1855 |
| Face Price: | 3 Skilling |
| Current Price: | $4,672,000 |

## 3. Japan 500 Mon Dragons Inverted: $6,378,800

![most valuable stamps japan 500 mon dragons inverted - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-japan-500-mon-dragons-inverted-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

Japan’s first stamps framed their value in “mon” currency between a pair of hand-engraved dragons. Because each plate was etched by hand, no two impressions are quite alike — and on this 500 mon example, the central value was set upside down.

The error went unnoticed for more than a century before a collector spotted it. It now ranks among the highest prices ever paid for a single stamp anywhere: it sold at a Geneva auction for around $5.8 million, roughly $6,378,800 in current value, making it the most valuable stamp in Asia and one of the most valuable in the world.

| Country: | Japan |
| --- | --- |
| Years: | 1871 |
| Face Price: | 500 Mon |
| Current Price: | $6,378,800 |

## 2. British Guiana 1 Cent Magenta: $12,789,400

![most valuable stamps british guiana 1 cent magenta - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-british-guiana-1-cent-magenta-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

The British Guiana 1 Cent Magenta is the only major postage stamp missing from Britain’s Royal Philatelic Collection — because only one is known to exist. Originally intended for use in local newspapers, it was produced as an emergency measure after a delayed shipment of stamps.

Often called the rarest stamp in the world, it was sold to shoe designer Stuart Weitzman for $9.5 million, around $12,789,400 in current value.

| Country: | British Guiana |

| Years: | 1856 |

| Current Price: | $12,789,400 |

## 1. Mauritius Post Office Stamps: $14,067,100

![most valuable stamps mauritius post office stamps - Luxe Digital](https://media.luxe.digital/most-valuable-stamps-mauritius-post-office-stamps-luxe-digital-1280.jpg)

Worth more than many celebrated paintings, the Mauritius Post Office stamps sit at the very top of the philatelic world.

At a glance they look like any other British stamp of their era. What sets them apart is their origin: they were the first British stamps ever produced outside Great Britain.

Around 27 examples of the One Penny red and Two Penny blue are believed to survive. At least three are affixed to ‘Ball Covers’ from Lady Elizabeth Gomm, famous for the lavish balls she threw in Mauritius.

One Ball Cover bearing a One Penny red sold for €10,027,800 — around $14,067,100 in current value.

The crown jewel, though, is the Bordeaux Cover: an envelope carrying both the One Penny red and Two Penny blue, never used. It last surfaced at a Swiss auction for 6,123,750 Swiss francs, and given the prices its peers now command, it has almost certainly appreciated since.

## Buyer’s guide to the most valuable stamps

Before you start a collection, it helps to understand what actually makes a stamp collectible and valuable.

If you’re chasing the most valuable stamps in the world, a few things matter. Condition counts, but the real value lives in rarity, deep history, and the occasional printing error. The most valuable coins are judged by similar standards.

The single most important factor is rarity. If you hold a stamp no one else has, people will pay top dollar for it. The British Guiana 1 Cent Magenta is the perfect example — not even the British government has managed to get its hands on one.

History matters too. Take the Mauritius Post Office stamps: prized not only as the first British stamps made outside Great Britain, but for their charming role inviting guests to extravagant balls.

For many of the stamps on this list, though, the decisive ingredient is what the stamp was never supposed to be. A misprint can send value soaring. Look back through this list and you’ll find error after error transformed into a collector’s treasure.

To find the true heavyweights, you need all of it at once — rarity, history, and a striking error, on a stamp in excellent condition. Find that, and you may be holding a small piece of paper worth far more than its weight in gold.

## Conclusion: The world’s most valuable stamps

Spanning many countries and a long, strange history, the most expensive stamps in the world are full of surprises. Perhaps it’s the upside-down dragons of Japan’s great rarity that catch your eye. Or maybe it’s the ballroom intrigue behind the Mauritius stamps.

Whatever draws you in, the world’s most valuable stamps look set to keep climbing in value as the years pass. Just remember to keep your tongue off them.
